looking to pick a rioter's brain about what they think of the current state of runes
Title. Doesn't have to be "This is what riot thinks as a whole" I'm just looking for how the design process goes and post launch assessment what kinds of questions you want to think about as a designer. And how a Rioter might think about the system.
To me the problem children are Dark Harvest, Aerie, Lethal Tempo, Klepto, and Glacial augment for the keystones. And to a lesser extent the 1st row of precision, and a few sorcery and inspiration runes feeling too inferior to another choice in their row. Would you agree with this assessment?
DH being bad devourerer/feralflare, and I don't think Riot likes when the jungle is just 'hunker down and farm and then blow people up late' being the meta, it creates bad games for everyone except like one person. I want to know what sort of playstyle they wanted to see from it if not that, and if they want to create a healthier version of that style eventually or just drop it. I think its an interesting idea for a design space - do you agree that that playstyle should be workable? Supported through runes, items, or the champs themselves?
Aerie I think is really cool, but the champs I see it on are more damage champs than shield/poke champs, ones that would not want to build athenes, which I think aerie gets along with quite well. I think I know where you were going with it - to have a shield heal hybrid damage keystone and have comet for just the damage and guardian for just shield - and I think you can push that design further, maybe have the shields you do increase Aeries damage and vice versa like Athenes, I don't know. Where do you want Aerie to exist design wise, and what champs do you want picking it up? Would you want to limit which champs want to take it to make it easier to balance or give players more options for a damagey keystone?
Lethal tempo I think might actually not be as bad as I perceive it, its just it doesn't feel like it does anything until you've got those fat attack speed items. Plus I think its arguably TOO easy to play around, because your opponent can sometimes force the cooldown out of you but just standing in a bit of your waveclear for a sec. I think having a design space for a late game keystone not named dark harvest is good, but I think it needs to not feel nearly as bad so early. That's pretty subjective of me to say, but I think its the general consensus. Putting a bit more control in the user's hands might be good, like having it only proc on basic attack. Who know though, maybe meta shifts will happen and it'll be the bees knees in a month.
Klepto I have a lot of feelings about but I want to know how you feel about it. Are you ok with its disparity in use (I don't know the design term for this, but when one thing is really good on some guys and mediocre on the others) as it is now, and how do you want to go about messing with it if you're not happy? Nerf its primary users? Nerf it so that its just bad on other champs but serviceable on its core users? Or scrap it and redesign whatever design space klepto is filling. I'm not sure what space it is filling to be honest, maybe the old $$$-happy things like heart of gold and avarice blade - sacrifice power now for power later - but I think those got removed for a reason (a reason I do not know).
and you'll have to fill me in here because I can't see all the stats, but does anyone actually use glacial? Are its users seeing similar results on other keystones? If I were to ask you "was glacial augment a hit or miss, is it being what you wanted it to?" how would you respond?
Finally, are these good questions to be asking if I'm interested in design, or am I on the wrong track or not thinking about this correctly? What questions were you guys asking yourselves post preseason update? How do you measure something like "was this a hit or a miss" - is it like the champion breadth/depth axes you talked about in that one nexus post (those are always super interesting to me btw, complements to the chef(s))?
Hope this isn't too much to ask and that Riot compensates you for responding to boards posts rather than spending your free time on here.
