Tips for someone new

First off! Good morning everyone, I hope all is well. Or at least getting better.

I am relatively knew to this game and I've taken long breaks in between playing. The gaps are generally because some, more vocal, elements of this community make the experience unpleasant to play with. I've already watched some youtube videos and I have a high level understanding of what each class does along with its strengths or weaknesses. I mainly play support such as Sona or Soraka. As I enjoy that play style the most of all. At the beginning of the match I let me team know that I am still learning and new at the game. I ask for any feedback or if I make a mistake to point it out and how to get better so I won't make those mistakes again.

  1. How do you know what items to buy? I generally go off the recommended tab and pick up the defensive items on it.

  2. When I am in the lane(?) with someone else playing support how long would you say to push towards the tower before falling back? Worst thing that happens is that I am with someone and they start fighting, while initially behind them providing heals and support they turn quickly and now I am in front and get killed. No communication or ping. How do you know that they are about to peel away and to stay behind them move first.

There are many other questions I have, but I am sure I will learn them in the course of play. So if you didn't read all that what are tips to improving?

Thank you much! Jade Lily

hi there imma give you some quick and general tips and answer the 2 questions you asked. 1: Wards are your friend when you have a ward available either - item 3362 or item 2055 be sure to put it down in a bush so you are safe. 2: Dont talk back to flamers.. eh simple no point. 3: Select a few champs you find fun and play them mostly you should focus on learning one champion for the start of your league career then as you get to know the game more switch to more champs 4: Dont try too hard to communicate with people. trust me dont. 5: Watch streams to learn more about the game there are many too choose from and alot are funny. For you i suggest APHROMOO great player great guy and informative about support/adc 6: WATCH your minimap 24/7 every 5 seconds watch your map to know where the enemy is. For items you should stick with the recomended items untill you learn what each item does this just takes some time not a big deal most recomended items are good usually. As far as the scenario you described if your mate doesnt back off when you tell em someone is coming let him die. he is stupid he should die not you if you think you are going to die to a gank just back ping your mate and then run if he doesnt listen let him die. - But he will say i dint help him etc etc. It doesnt matter stupidity is what handicaps more than 80% of the playerbase thus why only 5% of the playerbase is diamond 4+. edit: if you got more questions ask happy to help new people so they dont become toxic assholes because they get stuck in low elo since nobody ever taught em how to properly play

Hey there - league Veteran with way to much time spent in-game - I also main support and have been playing that way for a long time - generally play @ high gold to platinum levels. Could go farther, have a kid - so too busy to really play seriously.

1.) Most players have a build in mind when they start, this is generally learned through play experience, or watching others, or 'build' websites. All 3 are viable. The recommended tab can work, but know that it is often outdated, and does not account for what items are 'hot' - Leagues state of balance is always changing, so certain items that are good for 2 weeks will often become not good after they have been nerfed. For example, item 3107 is currently very hot because it's active heal is pretty nuts - but this is going away with the next patch, and its health is getting reduced significantly - going to see less use. Experimentation with items as you play is one of the best parts about league. I'd suggest watching someone better than you, and learn from them, then make your own adjustments as you play and learn.

Furthermore, once you have your core build down, you'll want to have some alternate items ready for specific lane matchups and when players on the enemy team get fed. This is really important, and often separates Silver and Gold Players from Plats. As an example, if they have a fed mage in the mid-lane, you should be thinking about building a strong MR item like item 3102 . Also, with the Botlane meta shifting towards AP focus, and potentially seeing some AP-Carry focused picks (Like Ziggs in the ADC role?) This change in item build will be very important.

Sorry, that was way longer than intended.... ** 2.) ** This is a very difficult question to answer, because it really depends on where the enemy is at the time. Positioning and harassing is critical to the support lane, and something that can't really be explained in a paragraph. But, some basic tips:

  • Anytime either team can force a 2v1 scenario because someone is out of position, it can be a HUGE advantage for them - do not let this happen!
  • Learning what distance is 'safe' is different for every support in the game - This is something that is learned through play - each time you die, remember how, and try not to be there next time - Got hooked? Bad positioning... Got flashed on? too close... Got poked out of lane? Try to stay mobile....
  • As a support, you are intrinsically paired with a partner. Sometimes you will be in love with them, other-times you will loathe them - It can get rough. Try to communicate, and if push comes to shove and it gets toxic, stay safe, and let them play dangerously.
  • The closer you are to your own tower, the safer the lane is from ganks. The farther away you are, the more unsafe you are. Platinum+ players are generally aware of the potential of a gank - so they will instinctively pull back from pushing once they are past the river. Past the river means its dangerous. Be ready for a third party, and ward that river. Good players will also TRACK the jungler as well, to know if something is safe to push or not. Maximize their pressure on the lane.

Thats all I got this morning - goodluck. If you ever want to play some games, just add me.

I'm really not concerned about how I would place yet, only rank 10, and still a lot for me to learn.

  1. I was going between lanes to help a ping when another teammate was fighting a golem. So I healed really quick and used my one damage ability to help. Apparently that is the wrong move? If I didn't help they would have died, but because I hit the golem they get less? Or maybe I accidentally got a killing blow but when I got there they were about to die. I apologized and moved on to the lane I was going to help.

  2. In team fights my damage ability is AoE and I really can't control it as Sona. We were in a team fight and I used my ability and got a double kill. They were all low. It's not like I came in there hitting first. I came in healing and then assisted. But apparently that was the wrong move and they told me I was awful. But when I hung back in a future team fight three of my teammates died because I was just focused on healing. And they yelled at me again for not helping in the team fight. It gets confusing on what I'm supposed to do.

  3. When do you go for the dragons? Or that giant purple thing? I don't know what that is as most games never get near him.

  4. As Sona/Soraka should I only focus on support? Even when my few damage abilities could help in a team fight?

Edit: I apologize I did not thank you for your timely response! So thank you for your advice and input!

The best way, in my opinion is to pick a few champs and main them. If you can get good with them, then you can spend your time learning other things. Like Warding, Map Awareness.

DOMINUSX said a bunch of things, and you can focus on those after you choose a few champs.

The essential items is a good start for your first couple items. After that, ask yourself what you need. Do you need more damage (ap or ad), health, magic resist, armor, magic penetration, armor penetration, a way to remove stuns/disabled.... Once you play more champions, you'll learn what kind of items different champions buy and why (even champs in the same class buy different items).

For the second part, trust yourself. If you're worried about dying pushed up, don't push up. Others may know something you don't know and might have an escape ready, so make judgements for yourself

Thank you everyone for your timely and thorough responses to my questions! And I would be willing to play with anyone willing to put up with someone relatively new :)

Another question do you keep the camera locked to the hero or movable?
