How exactly do promotions work for B5 people

I thought I read that you can't be placed higher then what you finished the year before. So if I went 10-0 in placements will I still be placed in B5?

Yes because you can't get any lower.

Yes you'll still be bronze 5. But at least your MMR should be really high, so you can expect to get 25-35LP per win.

Yeah, 99% of the time you will not change no matter what Div you are in if you're in bronze. Though I did find recently that I was placed Silver 5 during Pre-season in 3s and just finished mine and got placed Silver III this time, so there are some exceptions but most of the time you won't get placed higher.

It depends on your mmr at the end of placements, and the soft reset generally lowers peoples mmrs.

The vast majority of people have an mmr equal to or lower than their actual rank (the various protections against demotion make the later more common than the former), which is why people will almost always place lower than they finished last season, even if they go 10-0.

That said, it's not impossible. People who had mmrs higher than their rank for some reason (e.g. smurfs and similar dodging repeatedly to avoid promotions) will potentially (or even likely) place higher than they ended their last season at for example. It's a contrived situation, but theres inevitably some in that scenario.

Someone who ended in b5 with a b5 mmr is unlikely to place higher though. However, going 10-0 is still going to go a long way to climbing out of bronze, since finishing b5 10-0 is going to leave you with a much higher mmr than someone who finishes b5 with a 5-5 record, who in turn is going to have a higher mmr than someone who finished b5 going 0-10. Your mmr influences your LP gains, so you still want to try your hardest and don't fall into the trap of thinking that just because you'll probably place B5 regardless that it 'doesn't matter'.
