QSS Nerfs from both standpoints
So I've never had a reason to post on the forums about game play. I always read the patch notes, and looked at them more from a design perspective, and why Riot did certain things made sense. However, I still, even after reading the QSS/Merc Scimitar nerf couldn't wrap my head around why this needed to happen. TL:DR is below, as this is a bit of a long post.
"The QSS and Mercurial Scimitar active has two uses: cleansing crowd control (Amumu ult) and purging combat debuffs (Zed ult). These cases differ in that crowd control is setup, while combat debuffs are the payoffs to such setup. When you cleanse CC, the enemy needs to lock you down again to aggress on you, but that tends to be a pretty reasonable ask."
The CC portion of QSS makes absolute sense. There needs be a trade off when it comes to CC, as many later in the game are above 2 seconds, which can make or break fights, some almost unavoidable. It becomes rather "Are you quick enough to get get rid of the cc, and still possibly allow for outplay" Instead of having nothing and just "Gettin' Gud." Not being able to get rid of a suppression makes those cc's more powerful than their counterparts, so some form of getting rid of them sounds balanced.
"By contrast, cleansing a combat debuff wipes the applicator's primary means of fighting you. So, those champs are pressured to snowball before their effects become meaningless, while their opponents are forced into buying QSS even if it's incredibly inefficient to do so. This leads to destructive effects on game balance which we've left unanswered for too long. With the understanding that there may be outliers we need to address, we're unshackling combat debuff champs from their quicksilver collars."
This is where I feel the design team kind of dropped the ball. While I understand the reasoning why they want to remove it, I don't see counter-play available to those players who will be the main target for these "debuff champs". Mainly Marksmen players.
Lets start at the top. What is the difference between say, cleansing a zed ultimate, as opposed to cleansing, a Skarner ultimate? Zed, if played like an assassin, and as designed, should be looking for the right opportunity to strike. Even after QSS is popped, Zed should have a means to get out,(with W or R) and re-read the fight on when to enter, and clean up, like assassins should. If Skarners is cleansed, the team have lost a means of initiation. They could still possibly pull the mid laner, assuming they didn't buy QSS. By saying you're removing the applicators primary means to fight, you need to include everyone whose primary means of fighting you is their ultimate. Vi, Skarner, Malzahar(I'll be honest, I haven't tried or seen him since the update so this is based on previous patches) Warwick need to be included in a group that's not just Zed, but Fiora and Trundle. Half those characters are still nerfed by the QSS play. And while I'm quite aware that one half I stated as well isn't considered "meta" at the moment and are receiving updates, does that really mean that it's ok to be hypocritical to those champions when redesigning the champions counter? Shying away a bit from Zed as the topic of this discussion, lets talk more about why character's get QSS. In pro-play, It's to be used against Fiora/Trundle in the top lane match ups, while Marksmen get it for CC, or the main culprit again, Zed. In very rare circumstances do any other players get the item in pro play, and even more rarely for something other than described above. So now, with the nerf, Fiora may become viable again. Sure she was nerfed. But a late game split-pushing Fiora is still a massive threat. Trundle now becomes the king of toplane. Period. S Tier all by himself. Maybe this is what Riot wanted. But the point I'm getting at is if a player picks up QSS for a debuff champion, when the enemy team has little to no CC as well, doesn't mean it's inefficient to buy it. It allows champions who would otherwise not be able to beat those champs, beat them. If we're talking split pushing scenarios, it means 1v1's, Qss needs to be used at a certain point, while in team fights, It should be baited out, so that these champions can use their debuff ultimates. If someone lasts picks Zed for his team that could possibly have done better with some CC from the mid lane, should he really be rewarded now that no adc is going to buy QSS for his ultimate? There are many ways to play LoL, but when players opt into decisions that really shouldn't benefit them, and they do, it removes a lot of weighing the pros and cons decision making from the game.
I'm clearly an ADC main. BUT, I'm also an avid Zed player, and Fiora was the 2nd champ I got to mastery 5. And I'm not crying for QSS to come back to the way it was. What I'm looking for is better clarification from a design standpoint on why this change was made. Cause with all due respect, saying a champ like Zed needs to snowball right now to be effective, when that's what assassins do, is snowball, is kind of silly, is it not? What is the counterplay to these champions now? What happens now if Zed is already snowballed? Do you need to now rely on your team to CC or peel him? What if he was a last pick Zed in ranked/draft, and you didn't build a comp to stop him? What if Fiora decides to never leave top lane. She's now guaranteed to get turrets, or a kill and a turret, unless you send the team. If you send the whole team, you quite possibly lose everything on the other side of the map now.
A red post on this would be fantastic, but not expected.
TL:DR-QSS change sounds hypocritical, doesn't seem to make much sense from a design standpoint. Asked for better clarification of QSS nerf from a design standpoint.
