Since everybody is talking about MMR

Why does it exist? I get that the point is to match you with players of the same skill level as you, but isn't that what ranks are for? The fundamental use for a ranking system is that if you win, you get rewarded by moving to a higher rank. Wouldn't it make more sense to place people up against someone their own rank and if they get on a win streak, reward them with more LP? Instead of placing them against someone of higher rank, move them up to that rank.

But I'm actually asking, because I don't know much about this topic, are there any inherent benefits to the MMR system over a much more simple ranking system?

i would assume riot uses mmr in conjunction with the tier system with the lp

based on you game history your mmr is effected and if it starts scaling upward... the match you with people of similar mmr but of higher rank for example silver 1 into mid -high gold games

then if you perform well playing in the higher rank tier then your mmr would state that you skill level is higher then silver and you are rewarded lp based on wins vs the mmr you play against... if you play vs lower/equal rank and win you get less lp, if you face higher rank you gain more mmr but if you lose vs lower/equal rank you lose more lp and lose less when you lose vs higher rank and based on your mmr adjust the amount of lp won and lost and therefore effects how you climb and how fast.

and it balances out when you reach the rank/tier/elo of your skill level and that is where you see the near equal gain and loss in lp

The rank system is the problem, not mmr. since games are matched based on mmr, what rank you are means absolutely nothing as far as matchmaking is concerned. The only purpose it serves is giving out rewards at the end of the season.
