Tutorial Scenarios

Alright everyone, the release of the new sandbox mode has sparked an idea (that might already be out there, but I haven't seen it so I'm making a new discussion and you can't stop me)

What if the Riot developers were to release a series of short (i'm picturing say 2-5 minutes) "tutorial scenarios" designed to teach the basic gameplay mechanics of a given champion. They could function as both a "trial run" before purchasing and as a guide on some of the basic to advanced mechanics of how their kit works and how they should be played.

For example: Let's say I select the "How to play Jhin" scenario because i've got no idea how to play him. I load into a specially sectioned off (or entirely separate depending on how ambitious this project is) map that gives me an objective. First there are a series of test dummies that I have to use my four abilities on, as well as a description of how the abilities work and interact with each other.
After the basic ability mechanics are explained, there might be a brief run-through of how to farm as Jhin or suggestions (coupled with scripted scenarios) on how I should navigate a teamfight. With pre-coded bots or dummies running their "routes" and suggestions on where I should position and fire.

Think of it as essentially the customary gameplay video released with a new champion, except that the player gets to play through the scripted scenarios and learn the mechanics first-hand.

These tutorial videos would solve a series of problems:

  1. They could replace or enhance the pre-existing "about" page that simply shows videos and text on the champions abilities.
  2. The scenarios would expand on the rather brief tutorial series and help to make the learning curve a bit less steep.
  3. Complex champions (like Taliyah or Azir) might experience a decrease in the massive gap between skilled and new players, thus making balance easier.
  4. Simple to play champions like Master Yi or Udyr would be explained to lower-level players, making it clear how to counter them and again making balancing easier (as well as reducing the number of rage posts about pubstomping champions)
  5. Fundamental concepts like farming, jungle routes, and positioning would be explained, helping to shorten the gap between low and high level players (or at least the gap in fundamental gameplay as opposed to the gap in individual mechanics and strategy)
  6. Educating players on mechanics and how to play their champion (and how to play against other champions) would, in theory, create a more healthy community by cutting down on issues based in misunderstanding or lack of knowledge. (ex. an under-educated player flaming about Master Yi or a higher-level player talking down to a newer player because they haven't learned to split push)
  7. The under-played and difficult to learn champions might see some more love, thus (somewhat) expanding the effective champion roster.

Optionally, there could be separate videos that feature a "generic" champion (looking at you Ashe and Garen) and serve to illustrate fundamental mechanics like farming, split pushing, or contesting dragon/baron. This would help newer players to cross the chasm between low and high level play, and would cut down on frustration for all involved.

I realize that the time invested to create gameplay tutorials for each individual champion would be significant and that it is no small thing to ask. I also believe, however, that it would do a great deal to solve many of the fundamental problems that plague the League of Legends community. (both in and out of game)

So in conclusion: please read through my concept and let me know if you have ideas for how it could be improved. (also comment and such so that more people see it and it has a chance of being refined into a new element of the game that could be beneficial to all involved)

TL:DR (because I get it, it's a massive wall of text) With the release of the new sandbox tool, we have the elements needed to create "tutorial scenarios" that are customized to help new players learn both specific champion mechanics and overall gameplay fundamentals. I think that these should be added and I want people to help me refine this idea.

On a side note, it could be possible to leave it up to the community to design the scenarios and send them in to be approved by Riot, but I don't know if that would actually save any time in the long run.

People designing scenarios using the sandbox tools is a topic for another day (or boards post ;) )
