AP Sona Viability in Diamond

Hey guys!

I achieved Plat 5 this season and decided to stop there because schoolwork piled up. Next season I'm aiming for Diamond 5 or maybe even higher.

I have over 340K points on Sona (Level 7), and I mostly build her AP (all the way to plat 5).

This is my usual build for her (not in order, this isn't a guide)

  1. Support ward item (wards infinitely valuable)
  2. Seraph's Embrace (spell spam late game + mana shield very useful)
  3. Lich bane (The upgraded sheen procs are amazing, though rarely I will get icebourne gauntlet instead if enemy is heavy AD)
  4. Luden's echo (extra burst is extremely useful + movement speed)
  5. Sorc Shoes - Magic pen
  6. Either Rabadon's or Spirit Visage or Redemption.

My playstyle on Sona is not based on a flash-ult 5 people (unless it's very clear to do so), because I'd get exploded. It's based on either a pick, or poking enemy teams down hard before engages. Ideally I chunk off 80% of a primary carry's health before we engage. Then I save my ult for peels and cc on other primary targets. I also kite extremely well with sona (my best play being a 1v3 against a yasuo, irelia and janna and getting a triple kill).

The reason I'm telling you all this is I want to know if this playstyle and build is still viable moving forward, or will I have to shift a bit? Because I really do aim for Diamond.

Note: I can dodge around 90% of cc skillshots aimed at me and 60% of the time I can get away even if they do hit me (with the boosted heals and movement speed), so getting caught with this build isn't my biggest concern. I'm more worried about people's ability to build against it, or play around it.

Any thoughts? Viable? Change it up?

Thanks!

It gets harder from Platinum on. Enemy teams will be smart enough to play def in lane against sona, or pick things like Leona with ignite and burst you level 1), and the build you do is the kind of build that works amazingly against blind "LET'S FOCUS ADC" teams.

My advice is, get a premade to duo bot with, a premade who knows what you're going to do, and plays a champ that works well with that playstyle (I'd go Draven)

item 3504item 3020item 3092item 3174item 3107item 3190 is a better AP build, I think.

You get 40% CDR and enough AP to make your abilities useful. You'd have less burst damage, but better sustained damage and more poke. You can also save your teammates and yourself far more effectively, making your entire team much tankier. Plus, these items are so much cheaper than your current build.
