Why is magic resist so elusive?

I dont understand how the resistances work. Does magic resist hold more weight than armor? There's really barely any MR you can get. The highest value is 55 on one item. while for armor it's 100 on multiple items (though their are drawbacks because now you have no health). Is it because the presence of crit and autos make it so you need more armor or is it because MR items really arent as good as they should be?

The reasoning behind the higher amount of armor vs MR is cooldowns. Auto attacks are the main reason for armor. Although it is possible to get on hit effects with your auto, the amount of damage being transferred by each auto is significantly higher than the amount of damage being transferred by magic. If MR was easier to come by, it would make AP champions obsolete. There by mitigating a smaller percentage of damage actually mitigates equal amounts of DPS as it is faster to pump out AD damage than AP damage.

Hope that helps you understand.

Well, it's kind of like you said. The physical damage sources are more numerous than magic damage, and they are naturally different. Magic damage tends to be bound by longer cooldowns, so making MR on-par with Armor would make magic damage dealers essentially useless against tanks.

so on one hand you could make mr stronger and render burst mages useless on the other hand you could make mr not so amazing and render mr useless

riot likes burst mages more than they like tanks so they went with the first option

There's also more utility/offensive items with MR than there are utility/offensive items with armour.
