The toxicity has gotten way too out of control

I'm a psychology major in College and I understand the basis behind it. You're an anonymous person, behind a screen. You have this mask, and no one can harm you. There's no real threat behind your actions ( besides a banned account). Since there is no real world backlash this type of toxic behavior is running rampant. If a player performs badly , they get berated and attacked infinitely. And the people know they can do this, they know you don't know who they are, they know that they can make a new account. With this in mind they do it over and over and over again. What I want to figure out is why? Everyone has bad games including the toxic person who then blames the whole world instead of themselves. You have to realize this is a GAME. A TEAM game. Yelling and attacking people for their race, gender, and even just having a bad game is not ok. Attacking them does nothing at all to help the game. If someone is feeding and is just having a terrible time, help them, work with them , tell them how they can improve during the game. Do not attack people, this is not a place to feed your precious narcissistic ego. There is always someone better than you and there is always someone worse than you. All I ask is, work together, help each other. And players who are getting attacked by these toxic players, Please just mute them. The first instance they start attacking just mute them. It will help your mind be at ease and you can focus. Instead of the game turning into a 4v6 because the toxic person is attacking you too.

This is why I say the "naming and shaming" ban on the boards would actually be more useful in stopping bad behavior. In this day and age, people put enough stock in their online persona that having their peers mock their behavior is probably a harsher punishment for them than a 14-day ban and retained anonymity. That said, I understand the practical reasons for the rule. I just wish there were some safe way to drag bad behavior into the light so it has social consequences within the game, beyond merely a stern warning.

Why? Because it feels good. It's sadism. It's also a tribalistic method that losing teams will use to scapegoat why they lost. Did your jungle die a lot early? Blame him while ignoring the fact that he was invaded by the enemy jung / mid and you sat in your lane instead of helping.

It's not about them "learning there's another way" or they not knowing "how to act with human decency". The vast majority know, but don't want to act that way. It's basic human nature. You can pretend like it's not and continue asking yourself "why?" or you can accept that many people are like this.

And this...

"they know that they can make a new account"

Is why RIOT's trash system doesn't work. The Tribunal was better, even if subjective, because it gave the player base the freedom to police itself. This auto shit is bullshit.

Can you please use your effort and time to fix facebook first, a purely social site. And just let us play our stupid game! The "negative" behaviors has been in competitive sports for all time. Don't fool yourself it has everything to do with being behind a computer screen. Humans are highly competitive and really, this exact behavior, is the only reason we have survived for so long. Pacificity leads to death, ask those friendly white rhinos.

Things that cause me to become toxic:

  • Allies who stand right next to me farming minions, refusing to help, while I am being attacked.

  • premades that go into their little premade world and ignore the other allies on the team and refuse to help them in any way

  • people who refuse to speak fucking english on a north american server

  • people who refuse to help the team with objectives, ganks, or other team oriented tasks

Sorry but i just can't stand people who join a team game and refuse to play as a team. If you won't give me a way to penalize bad players who destroy my game, I feel helpless and desperate and I end up expressing that frustration with bad words.

How about put the personal ranking system into use, so players who consistently get S don't get grouped with trash who consistently get D, and getting a good rank on a loss does not result in as much points being deducted as getting a bad rank on the same loss.

Do this and I promise the "toxicity" will evaporate.

May I add most toxic players are well aware of their actions, and either lack the common sense to see what they are doing is hurtful, and expect people to be as stone as they are when it comes to being chewed out as they are dishing it.

If you are a psychology major you should try to have another perspective on things. Imagine a teenage, with different background, age. culture, life situation, family, friends etc. They have very low self-awareness and are controlled by emotions. As soon as things dont go their way they will yell and scream, point out peoples mistakes and never admit to their own. This is the same types of people who will rage out (and figuratively cry when you call them bad).

The reason is very simple, nobody never ever told them or taught them that it is wrong behaviour and how to behave otherwise. Nobody has ever hold their hand and told them to reflect on things they do or say. When playing public sports, kids (and parents) will rage out. But then there will be coaches and parents talking to them and telling them it is wrong. Nobody does that over video games, because it is not visible in public.

Most people are not toxic at heart, that is usually a reflection of their life and their problems, and poor understanding. You can never tell people how to behave or react, rather teach them and help them understand more about themself, not telling them that they should think like you.

You cannot expect everyone to be at your standards, you have to lower your standards and meet theirs. The no backlash thing i do agree with you. But thats the problem over anonymity and persists all over the world, including harrasment and threats.
