To Zed or not to Zed

(screenshot is to prove a later point) I've played league for about 2 or so years, including breaks (not very long ones, the main break i took was about 3 months) and after that break, I got back into league, unplaced in ranked, silver 4 or 3 (5? idk) I believe, and I starting playing different champions besides MasterYi, who I mained for season 6, and wound up with mastery 6 with. I picked up Nasus, got him mastery 5, played some Tryndamere, mastery 5 as well, and I got into Zed and Yasuo, now my friend who played for 4 years said not to play those 2 (for good reason, I'm not a noob at this game at all) and I stopped eventually. I got Veigar, and that sure did something. I dropped to Bronze V in my placement matches, and was stuck there for about half a month i'd say. But I suddenly got alot better at Veigar , and ended up with Mastery 6 on him as well. Now I want to be a bit more "impressive" I guess i would call it. Seeing people outplay and completely destroy enemies seems amazing and would be fun, cause the team relies on you and thinks your good. I want to be considered good and impressive at the game I guess, and I realized that one of the best "outplay" champions is Zed. Now I am on a good "streak" with Veigar and I've climbed out of Bronze V and into Bronze III, currently at 59 lp. I've won nearly ALL the games i've played recently with Veigar, and think if i stuck with him, I could get him as my first mastery 7 and maybe get into Silver or so (Placement wound me up in bronze II, just a note) but I want to play and maybe learn Zed as he is VERY outplayish, and I want to be able to make amazing plays like that, but since theres so many variables (mainly positioning of shadows to get in, kill, and get out) and the ban rate, etc. I want to start playing him, but my friend might say it's not a good idea (he isn't going to be a deciding factor, i'll do what I please :P) but mainly, the tl;dr is (stated below for lazy people)

tl;dr: Should I stick with Veigar who will probably be able to get me into silver or so, or take the long time playing Zed and try to be a outplaying good person?
