@Meddler: Everything Right With Poppy's Rework
A couple hours ago I made a thread @Meddler: Everything Wrong With Poppy's Rework, which details what I think Riot has done horribly wrong with Poppy's relaunch. I feel it is only fair to point out that there are several excellent things about her rework as well, which I'll list below:
-
Visually speaking, she looks phenomenal. She definitely still reads as Poppy, and now her hammer is even bigger and beefier than before. I am so glad that her design has stayed so recognizable, while still being so much more beautiful than her old model and vfx.
-
She now has a way to survive the lane phase because of her passive. I have already said I'm not a huge fan of this, but it does remedy one of her biggest shortcomings, which is struggling to survive the lane phase. It is an interesting method of approaching this problem and is more clever than just "buff her base stats until she's good early game".
-
Her Q is still a low cooldown nuke with a large % health ratio. This is pretty core to her "dash-n-smash" identity in my opinion, and the fact that they kept this ability the same in spirit and overall purpose is excellent.
-
Her W passive is a healthier form of her old passive. It is much less archaic and a lot more straightforward in terms of giving a clear number to the player telling them how much they gain when at low health, which is something her old passive lacked (that lack of clarity is what made her old passive such a massive source of invisible power).
-
Her W active is the "Screw you mobility champs!" ability everyone has been longing for, and I'm so excited that I can go out and shut down the Rivens, Lee sins, Vaynes, and other mobility crazed champs in the game. They also kept the large MS boost from her old W, which I think is really essential to her kit (especially for lining up clutch E stuns).
-
Her E is almost identical to how it works on live. I cannot say how glad I am that this is the case, since this was probably the single most distinguishing part of her kit as a Poppy player. Yeah she had damage, yeah she had her ult, but nothing in the game felt better than lining up the perfect stun so that you could wallop their sorry backside in peace. This ability is what gave me my first double kill, and I've loved it ever since. Thank you Riot, thank you.
-
Her R looks like one of the funniest abilities in the game. The vfx are perfect, and the concept is very distinct. It allows her to total remove a champion/champions from a fight, and as anyone who's been head butted over a jungle wall by an Alistar during a Team fight knows, that can be devastatingly powerful for a team that is on roughly equal terms. This Ultimate can essentially turn any fight into an advantageous pick for Poppy's team, or it can disengage a fed team with ease.
-
Support Poppy will still be a thing after the rework comes out (if not the go-to role). She is less reliant on gold, stronger early game, and has more options to protect a carry. This is a welcpmechange in my opinion, since support Poppy was always fun, just not quite good enough to use regularly (unless you happened to practice it a lot with a duo partner).
-
She kept her basic burst combo W>E>Q>AA, and it still seems to feel the same way, even though Q isn't an AA modifier anymore.
-
She isn't game-breakingly OP late game. This may sound like a bad thing to some other Poppy players, but to everyone facing the Poppy, this is something worthy of a parade and maybe a party and some cake. This also means that she can be buffed to a state of being consistently useable, something she would never have gotten pre-rework (she worked before, but she wasn't reliable).
-
She isn't totally lacking in damage or ratios currently. She may be required to build tankier than before, but her base damage and ratios are higher than before (albeit, not tied to a one-two punch from E>Q), so if you do build damage it'll hurt. You'll just have to play knowing you don't have the extreme safety late game Poppy used to have.
I've undoubtedly missed some things that make her rework amazing, so please comment them below. If you are more in the camp that her rework is terrible, check out my first thread instead. Either way, I hope you enjoy, and leaving an uproot so a Red sees this would be very appreciated.
