A pleasant shock!
I felt a strong desire to share my pleasant experience with League today and so here I write this as a form of “public-diary.” I don’t know why, but today I felt a strong urge to share my feeling and thoughts. Don’t read it if you don’t want to.
I have been a top and an adc main for a very long time. Playing actively a little over a year, I will strongly admit I have experienced far more toxicity than good sportsmanship, from enemies and allies alike. Once in a while I get auto-filled as support, and having little experience in this position, I choose as my comfortable go-to support. I realized I perform relatively well as Soraka so today I decided to rank with her a few games. From constantly trying to have 3 wards and 1 control ward up, looking across the map to save allies with my ult, to desperately flashing to silence a ’s ult, I gave all I got.
Now here’s the pleasant part, whether I lost or won, my teammates actually expressed appreciation! Yes this happens once in a while but the compliments for 4 games in a row shocked me. I was shocked to have felt this because, being desensitized to frequent individual’s rage and frustration for over a year, I felt as if I wasn’t ready to experience the opposite. Even if my adc and I lost the lane, the positivity allowed me to think more clearly and made me try harder to help my teammates. While I was very fortunate that I happened to get positive and encouraging teammates, more importantly, they made me realize something that is extremely obvious (that we often forget): this is a team game!
Yes, a team game! If someone did something well, compliment them! If bot fed 4 kills at 8 mins encourage them to stay safe rather than telling them to drink bleach. If a team fight went wrong, don’t spam ping ???????? at the last remaining member who is almost dead, instead state what went wrong and suggest a change in tactic we should adjust to. Yes, there is a “solo” queue but ultimately, in the end, you will need your teammates to win. In my most recent game, my adc and I lost the lane but no one complained. Instead, we worked with our jgler to help mid take tower. No one became toxic that, despite 3 tanks/bruiser on the enemy side, that our top chose
. No one became toxic that our
gave 3 early kills and was almost half the CS as
. No one even tried to surrender at 20, Instead we tried (and won!) while the enemy fizz demoralized his own teammates with his toxicity. To add a cherry on the top, my
adc (a complete stranger to me) decided to gift me a mystery skin! I asked why and he/she said “you were the first support I had today that didn’t rage or int, ty.” Despite not being too hot in lane, someone was still appreciative of my effort! The comment alone gave me a brief moment of inspiration to genuinely improve as a team player than to simply seek for "wins."
If you actually read all this here’s my obvious two cent: be a positive team player! You may actually surprise someone and brighten their day. If you already are, please continue to be the great person that you are. We love you!
It is healthier to make someone genuinely want to get better Than to make them end up bitter
