Countering Yi as a Support, or literally anything at all.

So, I'm going to start this off by saying I'm EXTREMELY new to the game. I'm only summoner level 19, and I pretty much only play my main Soraka and sometimes Ahri . There's always games where it seems like a champ regularly does better, no matter who plays it. I assume that most of the time, it's my fault because I'm inexperienced. Then there's MasterYi . Yi is, consistently, fed in every single game I play when he's in it. I'm not saying he's OP, because I'm sure it comes down to my inexperience, which is the purpose of this thread. I've searched forum after forum for counters, and nothing seems to work. Does anyone know a reliable way for a support to even deal with a gank from Yi, or if not, then for a group of 5 people to get Yi below half health?

Thank you.

Beyond warding, try supports with hard CC that's quicker than Soraka's root/silence.

Morgana's root is a good example.

If you're going to do raka into yi, which I don't think you should have to switch champions cause one certain one is always pub stomping, you want to wait till he is on your carry and e. This will stop him from using his q or w (he may have already used q and his ult he probably already used). Take exhaust into him to lower his dmg as well. Itemize against him. Building is the best way to counter people! Frozen heart is good, although his ult nullifies the unique passive (but it's still armor and cdr). Zeke's gives you armor and is already a good support item. Mikael's, Athene's and Ardent Censer give your heals more healing which can be good as well. Don't worry as well! You'll see him less and less (like blitzcrank) the higher in level/rank you get. Just remember not to e before he is on your carry. Your silence is a very valuable tool. And don't forget to try new supports into him! Janna is my main and she is good at dealing with him, but just play somebody you have fun with <3

So first and foremost pick up these champions. Leona Morgana Sona these champions have a reliable stun / snare. 2nd always as a support main pick up a Sightstone first back as well as a pink ward. Pink ward either your tribush (if you are blue side) or pink ward the dragon pit (if your red side) and then place stealth wards in other prime locations. (Tribush, Way from blue, and your standard river bush)

Late game your going to want to NUKE yi in team fights. If you land a single snare / stun on him he's done. Game over. Other than that your going to have to play safe when you spot a yi on the map.

Best way to deal with Yi ganks as support is, believe it or not, warding.

One stun or root will turn him into a smear on the floor.

Just a few things in general since I have hundreds of games on Yi since season 4:

  1. Don't play his game. Yi is strong when you try to melee mode him 1v1. What you want to do is avoid situations where the enemy strong and you are weak. You need to create the situations where you are strong and the enemy is weak.

  2. Poke him out. Yi is purely melee, has only a short ranged gapcloser and no CC. That means you don't worry about him being the engage. If they don't have any other strong engage, Nidalee Azir Ziggs Xerath Lux can just poke him away while he can't run in because of the rest of the team. Then once he is forced to B (or stays and dies uselessly) you engage 5v4.

  3. Just group. Even though Yi isn't that bad in teamfights he's far more dangerous when you are isolated.

  4. Walk away. Pre-6, Yi has no CC and only a single short ranged gapcloser. Literally just walk away from him.

  5. CC him. Not all champs are equally vulnerable to CC. A Garen Malphite Rammus that gets CC'ed doesn't even break a sweat. Yi explodes when CC'ed from base damage alone unless he built tanky, but if he built tanky he's not going to be deleting people.

Alright, so what I've gathered from this is to use summoner 3 on him, then hope the adc and I can kill him if he ganks, but before anything, I need to ward everything. I may pick up some more champions with better CC when I get enough IP built up. I'm thinking likely Sona . Thank you very much.

I enjoy playing Master YI vs Soraka b/c she has no hard CC. If you are playing as Soraka into Yi, you have to stay in the backline and hope he focuses your carries so that you can heal them. When Yi is near range AA-ing your ADC, put a silence field under him, so he can't dodge abilities with his alpha strike; and if you are low HP as Soraka, make sure to back off so that Yi can't reset off you. (Exhaust counters Yi hard too. If you exh Yi, save your silence field so you can interrupt his meditate.)

Good team comp. Plus you are probably playing against a bunch of smurfs with waaaaay more experience than you.

Pretty sure Morgana would work, just wait for him to go in with q then chain q and r. He shouldn't be able to gank well pre six unless the support locks you or the ADC down and post six just wait for q and then cc him.

Alistar is the best support pick for countering him. Don't W-Q combo him. Knock him away if you need the peel from a gank. If he alphas to get back in range (probably under turret at this point) then knock him up under it. Same goes for teamfights later (though less turret help, more team help).

The problem with Morg is that her Q is the only way to take him out, which is easily dodged by his Q.

Morgana Zyra Brand Amumu Annie Blitzcrank Fiddlesticks etc are some of the champs you want to learn as sup.

Best counter to Yi is Hard CC. Good counter is killing him faster than he can kill you (Teemo Fizz are couple of champs who can do so.)

If you can't kill him, hard CC and then run away. If you deny him a kill when he ults, he'll back away.

Any form of hard cc (stuns, knockups, etc). Roots also help.

For example Alistar's knockup (but you need to get the headbutt->pulverize combo right), or nami's bubbles work. Alistar in this example is better though, since he is tankier thus has longer to react. Most support (not soraka though, since so much of her power is in healing) can deal well with him.

Or pick jax (as a junlger, not support), and watch yi cry as you dodge his attacks for 2 seconds and then stun him (a good yi can deal with jax, though jax still has the upper hand. But there shouldn't be that many good yi's in your games).

What did I do? I started playing yi myself. Then I learned all the counters to him... the hard way.

Serevas7/10/2016, 9:07:28 PM1 votes

Ward and bring hard CC to the game. Stuns and snares will shut down Yi pretty quick, then when you have him locked down focus fire him and blow him up, he's typically squishy as it is.
