Its really shines if you are good at last hitting. Or the champions has innate wave clear built into their kit. Or at least that is my thoughts on it.

The thing is you lose a lot of combat stats, making you prone to getting zoned out and actually missing a lot of cs, for a final benefit of 130 gold only (cull sell price (180) - cull price (450) + benefits from cull (400) )

One could argue however that Doran's blade, when sold, has negative value (180-450 = -270 gold).

Which means Cull vs Doran's blade, if you consider selling those anyway, you gain a benefit of 400 gold from Cull.

That's nice, but you're most likely going to lose lane, lose control of objectives and get simply snowballed on (and you will get an exp. disadvantage if you're getting destroyed). On champions who already have a weak laning, it's a ticket to getting dumpstered.

But in a freefarm matchup with no kill pressure, it would actually be worth the price. Yet in the preseason, things are a bit too snowbally for that situation. Maybe when things are less snowbally and we see less fast-paced games, this item could rise in popularity.

Cull is way better top lane than bot lane. Top lane marksmen like Quinn and Vayne love it because they don't need to be able to get in a bruiser's face. They just poke him down with ranged attacks while farming. They won't get zoned, they won't miss cs, because they're the ones doing the zoning. It's basically free farm for the ranged top laner, and they'll turn around and sell it once it's finished and get even further ahead.

Idk, I like to buy it. But I'm a scrub that just likes free gold :)

Most people think it is bad because it offers very weak stats for trading in lane.

If you compare item 1083 and item 1055, you can see the difference pretty easily.

  • item 1083's combat stats are 5 AD and 3 HP on-hit.
  • item 1055's combat stats are 8 AD, 80 HP, and 3% lifesteal.

Doran's blade offers 3 more AD, 80 more health, and better sustain if you deal more than 100 damage per attack. Early on (as in before first back) Cull offers slightly better sustain, but overall it trades a lot of lane power for the gold passive. Basically what it comes down to is whether making a net profit of 130 gold back after selling your start item is worth more than those combat stats (in particular, the fact that D-Blade's lifesteal scales naturally throughout the game as you build more damage, while cull doesn't).

I wouldn't say Cull is Garbage, but I would say it's a substantial risk with only limited reward. If you are playing a super strong lane bully like MissFortune and can afford to take it without hurting your lane dominance, then it can be great for snowballing into the mid game. For pretty much any non-lane bully, I'd avoid it since it only sets you further behind your opponent early on, which can be enough of a set back that you may not ever recover before the game ends.

The thing is, you have to determine whether 400 extra gold after 100 minions is worth more than 3 AD (105 gold value) and 80 HP (213 gold value), not even considering that the sustain outscales cull. Taking Cull is like going to lane with a 320 gold deficit from the start, and while you eventually lose those 320 gold worth of stats for another item and not the 400 gold from cull, that starting differential is bad enough that it usually isn't worth it. To top all of that, the stats you do get from cull are worth about 250 gold, while D-blade's stats are worth 605 gold, which is gold efficient enough that you can keep it almost all game without hurting yourself, while you need to sell cull asap to get rid of the gold inefficient stats.

If Cull gave 2 gold per minion kill and 400 gold for getting to 100 minions (600 total), then it might compete with D-blade and make up for the stat discrepancy you inflict on yourself. Since it doesn't, the occasions to buy it are few and far between.

an example of a good time to BUY not start cull will be taken from my last game.

enemy kog' and taric bot, vs Sivir me and Thresh.

taric lee-sin and flash to get me for an early gank.

Kog comes back with LS and Cull and Im assuming max'd his passice AS first. When i got back to lane, everytime id think about farming kog would attack so fast even at lvl 4 that he out trades me every time but with thresh i manage not to feed.

on kogs next buy he had sold his cull and had purchased a Runuans and though they ended up losing the game kog had the best CS score and was very close to carrying to victory. Props to Friendly riven who would delete all the baddies and win us the game.

it seems like it can be effective but really it might only force you to feel like to you need hardcore CS. I did manage to kill him a few times but it was because of either mistakes he made or good teamwork and ganks on our part. with cull and tagons brace, and a tanky support it is very easy to ensure your CS is very healthy but it takes more than 1 item to win a game.
