Nothing says a Plat is playing their main role/champion in a Normal game. They could have gotten to Plat playing only Support, then play a Normal game as a carry. You wouldn't expect someone in that situation to be playing at their best.

In general, the higher the rank of someone, the fewer normal games they've played that season (and vice versa). It's possible that a Silver player has played enough Normal games to improve their Normal MMR to the point where a Plat player who doesn't play Normals very often is at.

Why match silvers against plats in ranked?

Codeword Seal9/19/2016, 4:04:04 AM3 votes

Because that's how MMR works. If they actually played like they did in ranked in normals their normal MMR would be higher, but they don't so it's not. Their average ability to secure a victory in normals is such that their inclusion in the same match as you is what yields the most balanced experience.

In ranked they play their best champions in their best role and try their absolute best overall, while in normals they play off-roles on new champions while halfway through a bottle of wine. Yes, if they decide to tryhard in normals that particular match is going to represent a imbalance, but if they did that often enough to matter they wouldn't be in your games.

My favorite example is me being a Silver 5 Jungler playing mid for once getting matched against a Plat 1 400k Yasuo main.

Fun times :^)

Genuwhine369/19/2016, 12:53:31 AM2 votes

because they are just as bad.

Vallalan9/19/2016, 11:46:53 AM2 votes

the mmr is usually balanced out. you rarely see the good ole ( plat plat, gold, gold, silver) vs (gold gold, silver silver, silver).

obviously MMR is hidden so you don't know everyone's MMR but it is usually close to balanced.

sometimes the games are weird where one person's MMR makes the rest of the game hell for everyone else like :

(diamond, gold, silver, silver, silver) vs (plat, plat, gold, gold, gold)

I'm obviously bullshitting the actual ranks here, but generally speaking the games are balanced. its just the lanes won't be because the diamond may be playing an off role or support or something while the plats are matched up vs a silver.

Solari Fortune9/19/2016, 2:01:07 PM2 votes

Cause Normals and Ranked have entirely different MMR's So if the Plats play mainly ranked their normal MMR is going to be much lower

LuluInWonderland9/19/2016, 12:09:49 AM1 votes

Yeah, it sucks. I agree with DrCyanide and that is sometimes the case. It's also the case, sometimes, that there is a smurf or somebody in a much lower league than their actual MMR.

That said,. I've compiled a short list of my personal matches in the past couple weeks that were the most "unbalanced" in terms of MMR. Some if it is pretty extreme. I've had other matches (i.e. pre-30 non-smurfs against golds and plats but w/o a high KDA and with a ~35% win rate over the past 40 matches) that were pretty weird recently, but even that wasn't as lobsided as these. That said, a couple are ARAM so it's a little "meh", but even then diamonds versus silvers just isn't right.

Edit: For all the matches in the screenshots, there was no 2+ queueing going on with a low elo player and the high elo player(s).

dunkeroni9/19/2016, 5:17:59 AM1 votes

Because your normals MMR is different from your Ranked MMR.

Think of it on the flip side: If a player is dynamic queue'd with a group that gets them into Plat, why should they have to queue against plats in normals if they're still playing on a silver MMR? Matchmaking has been separated between normals, ranked, and ranked teams for years now.

So they can get better. I know thats how I improved, playing against golds and plats constantly in TB queue. Was able to get out of bronze in no time after that.

Desecrationn9/19/2016, 6:04:00 AM1 votes

It's 100% fair, I played vs a plat 4 kat as silver 5 zed and solo killed her 2 times in lane. go look at my history :)

Gelmous9/19/2016, 10:37:17 AM1 votes

why not ? they're equal in skill

invisiblecat19/19/2016, 10:56:02 AM1 votes

Played a game where the enemy team had 2 plats and 3 silvers against 3 bronze a silver and an unranked

ARequestOfDeath9/20/2016, 12:27:09 AM1 votes

I used to be able to defeat plats.

Marshbouy9/19/2016, 12:01:34 AM1 votes

Probably because of their normals MMR and possibly a premade thing. normals and ranked go off different MMRs(i think)

FioraWillCarry9/19/2016, 12:26:57 PM1 votes

It's quite a bit of effort to rank up. I don't think anyone would put in the effort to rank up both MMR(Norms and Ranked). Everyone that plays rank will spend the vast majority of their effort ranking up their ranked MMR while their Normals MMR remains in Silver.

Matthewrose9979/19/2016, 12:50:20 PM1 votes

It isn't fair but in normal games I'm glad to be paired up so i can improve. 6 months ago i couldnt even pla aginst bronze players and now playing with golds and plats means improvement has been drastic

Sir Angler Fish6/8/2017, 3:04:07 AM1 votes

I got matched with a diamond 5 in normals, and won... I'm bronze 1. It's all free game in normals

Lugg9/19/2016, 2:33:38 PM1 votes

You actually want that to happen. The quickest way to get better is to play against better players.

Pale Pirate9/19/2016, 5:12:15 PM1 votes

Because normal and ranked queues are separate so they have different elos AND because player A may have played 10 provisionals, become silver, and switched to normal, while player B may have played 10 provisionals, and then kept playing until he became platinum.

I am unranked, and after I complete my first 10 games I will probably become silver, but I'm certain I belong to the plat elo range.

Battlecast Sona9/19/2016, 6:46:38 PM1 votes

normal MMR and ranked MMR are completely and totally separate. Theoretically you can start playing ranked when you hit level 30 and never play normals again, hit challenger, and then go queue in normals and be like 1100 MMR in normals, playing against bronze players. they're completely separate systems.

GuiltyGecko9/19/2016, 7:00:08 PM1 votes

Normal games priority isn't to be fair, it's to give unrestricted queuing (meaning you as a silver can play with your diamond friend), and matchmaking speed.

If you want more fair matches, then I would recommend ranked.

LostFr0st9/19/2016, 7:31:05 PM1 votes

Normal mmr and ranked mmr are different and separate. How do you expect the higher mmr people to practice new champs?

Lirik9/19/2016, 7:36:24 PM1 votes

because rito hahahaha

LEEROY KLEDKINS9/19/2016, 7:57:36 PM1 votes

If one guy on either team is teamed up with a low elo guy then it can throw player balance out of whack.

Deal with it and you may learn something.

To be honest the game isn't that complicated to get good with. most champions i find can easily cheese a thing or two but everything has a counter to it aslong as you work as a team.

Calabok9/19/2016, 7:59:24 PM1 votes

It's just normals. There is no impact to ranked.

Potato Doc9/19/2016, 12:24:58 AM1 votes

Honestly im glad I can be paired up against someone of lower elo when im playing my other roles... Im really good top and jungle, but mid and support im probably gold, and ADC i might as well be wood V...
