A different way to achieve Mastery
(TL;DR: Tie champion mastery to a flat number of S-, S, and/or S+ scores. Increase the [# of S scores] required as well as the score itself (S or higher, no S-) as mastery rank increase. For example: rank 6 requires 100 S- or higher scores. Rank 7 requires 100 S or S+ scores. Rank 8 requires 200 S or S+ scores... etc.)
Instead of tying mastery 6+ to champion shards and RNG / RP through the hextech chests, tie it to actual game scores. Win % with a champ could be one way to do this, but it immediately excludes many players from achievement; also, a player's overall win-rate with a champion may not be representative of their actual skill with that champion: they could have maintained a very low win-rate while learning the champion initially. Perhaps some players should be excluded from the system in order to better show actual mastery. Still, win-rate seems inadequate because of the reason above.
Flat number of games played/quantity of mastery points (which is what ranks 1-5 are) are also poor at showing mastery because achievement requires little more than grinding. If you play better, you rank faster, but you could still hit rank 5 while having a score of D in every game.
So I just had a simple idea. Why not tie mastery levels to a flat number of S -, S, S+ scores. While still being a grind, this would be more meaningful in terms of showing actual champion mastery and skill with a champion, especially if the # of S scores requirement was rather high. For example, rank 6 mastery could require S-, S, S+ scores as it does now, but you would need 100 S- or higher games in order to hit rank 6. Rank 7 could require 100 games as well, but it would be even more difficult because only scores of S and S+ would count towards it. This would culminate in the "Legendary Rank 10 - 1000 S+ games with a champion" :P
These numbers could be adjusted (if anything, the [# of S scores] requirement should be higher than my example). Also, perhaps the rankings could remember lifetime S- , S, and S+ scores or something, and just add on to the previous cap.
This way, while still being a grind, would actually somewhat show proficiency with champions. Not everyone who played a champ for 50 games or whatever would be running around with mastery banners and emotes. Mastery would take more time and dedication with a particular champion. Mastery would take a while, but it would be a long something to look forward to/work towards. This is especially nice for players who have already purchased every champion, rune, and rune page and have nothing to work towards besides rank. While not as many top-rank champions could be attained, the ones you do attain would feel more exclusive and more of an accomplishment. Anyway, that's my idea.
