The Rune System

So, we know that a new, more complex Rune System will be coming in Season 7. So, I wanted to talk about the Rune System from Dawngate, a now-closed MOBA with a Rune System that I think is really close to what Riot is planning on doing for the next system.

Dawngate was a pretty fun game with a few awesome systems that I feel any MOBA could emulate, however it had a very poor new player experience with no Co-Op vs AI mode and with how difficult it was to get Shapers (Champions) unless you were playing perfectly every game. However, there were a lot of systems that I enjoyed a lot, and one of them was their version of the Rune System.

They had these slots, which you could slot their Runes into. Each page had a custom amount of slots, and their runes had 3 different colors to them. Slotting the proper color into the proper slot gave added effects. However, where it got really interesting was with the slots that had passives in them. The slots would take a number of different shapes, and you had a 4x4 grid to try and slot as many powerful slots in as you could. The passive slots were very large, large enough that you would probably only be able to have 1-2 of them in any page, but if you put them in and filled them properly, you got different passives as well as a pretty nice stat boost. The only one I remember off the top of my head right now was one that gave you a movement speed buff in brush.

I feel like the Rune System might have some pretty decent similarities when it's remade in Season 7. They have said that they plan on making them easier to get, more complex, and more noticeable. Dawngate's version of the Rune System fits that pretty accurately, except that their Runes were VERY expensive.

But what do you think? Do you think that Riot will take an idea from a dead MOBA, or do you think that they'll figure out something completely new and unseen?
