This will be quick, but simply put, riot failed to adapt to their audience (audience being both old and new players), because their view on change being inherently a good thing blinded them to notice that their best move to adapt to the environment which their game was living in, was to either diverge into independent populations or slow the pace of changing the game to match the pace of the change of the player base.

Like any living species changing is a necessary thing and a game that undergoes this kind of agile development cycle isn't any different. But even species branch off every now and then as different instances of the species find themselves in different environments.
