How does MMR really work?

I thought winning games make my MMR higher. I had like 1240 MMR and I played a game which I won and I went 18/5/9 and now my MMR is 1191... I am confused. What did I do wrong?

it's important to note that if using op.gg to estimate MMR that it is just that; an estimation. It's not necessarily accurate, something they have said openly in the past.

However if you notice that it went down after a win, it could be due to you duo-ing with someone.

  • If you have a duo the system recognizes that you should be carrying that game and win.

  • If you duo with someone of lower MMR, your MMR will also lower even if you win since you played vs people with a lower MMR

  • If you didn't duo with someone, maybe you had in the recent past and it affected your MMR and now it's going back to a more normal one

  • You could have been on a huge losing streak before that one win and the system thinks you should be at a lower rank tahn you are now

MMR is pretty tricky and soooo many factors affect it. A better gauge would be the amount of LP you win/lose per game. A balanced MMR should rest around 20 LP for a win/loss. I've seen up to a gain of 29 LP for a win if the system thinks that you are in a lower rank than you deserve, and down to 13 LP for a win if you are higher than they think you should be. The MMR equation has never been advertised to the public by those who've made it so it as a definite value doesn't really much of anything at the moment.
