Why was (and for the forseeable future, is) URF now an All-Random Gamemode?

I played ARURF. Plenty. Even with it's shortcomings, it's reasonably fun. But I never felt like I had any control. I didn't get to play the champions I was really interested in trying out. It was a lottery every game. Get a fun/useful champion? Yay. Get a shit champion/Yasuo? Good luck, reroll might help.

Why try to fix a comparably minor problem of URF meta formation with this honestly rage inducing set up? Is there some other reason I'm missing? I would really find it helpful if a Rioter (or well informed player) would given me detailed reasons why.

You pretty much described the only reason. People started to play the more powerful champs instead others so they changed it to random .-.

you couldn't play ANY non urf meta champ before, you just got facerolled by all the hecarims etc running around every game.

People took urf way too serious

better facing 2 op champs by lack of the draw, than facing 5

I think this is your answer. Riot said they noticed a devolved meta, and I'm 95% sure they also said that player engagement with URF heavily dropped.

Basically, people overall probably have more fun playing ARURF than URF over time, even if they're not aware of it. If the reverse was true, Riot would switch back in a heartbeat.
