lack of in-game comms hurts the game severely

so i was watching a POV VOD of Na'Vi GuardiaN playing matchmaking in CS:GO, and it had full comms from both teams

one of the guys on the opposing team wasn't using his mic, and his teammates were legitimately frustrated that he wasn't talking. "kRYPTIC, why aren't you talking man??" "... because i dont want to" "what the FUCK kind of attitude is that"

this is the kind of attitude the LoL playerbase needs to have towards communication. people shouldn't be fucking scared of using mics and of other people having mics. if someone's hardcore flaming and triggering you, mute them. not hard.

i've seen my fair share of casual and semi-pro teams who don't rarely talk and relay information when it matters. these are sometimes Master or Challenger players who don't seem to understand the value of talking. to link this to esports and the current world championships, the lack of in-built comms is a large part of the reason that western teams have absolutely garbage-tier communication across the team.

they're not used to talking, and even when the Mic Check feature shows them talking a lot, it's almost never about the right things. people are yelling over each other, almost everyone wants a different target, and there's no clear plan. watching full scrim leaks (ex TSM vs SKT) shows the exact same stuff. having 5 people yell out 4 different champion names until they all gradually yell the same champion name is not the way to communicate during a teamfight.

target selection needs to be determined beforehand, by a singular shotcaller whose word is law. if necessary, players key to making the play might even prompt the shotcaller "target selection?" or even something simple like "get who get who". during the fight, target selection should never dominate the comms unless the shotcaller wants to switch targets under their own judgment, not because the ADC suddenly sees a juicy opportunity.

there are vastly more important things to be saying into your mics. cooldowns of CC abilities. status of summoner spells, both yours and of enemies. cautioning teammates about potential fight-breaking items like zhonya's hourglass. communicating ranges, asking for peel from and for a specific champion, communicating who's being zoned and who has been chunked out of the fight. and most importantly, n e v e r talking over the primary shotcaller.

but nope, all you ever hear in western mic checks is a champion name chanted by the whole team. occasionally, you get something like "I'M FLASHING".

Even WoW tried in game comms and couldn't handle it and I bet WoW made 10x more than LoL. Why reinvent the wheel? It's a huge undertaking... Especially when there are a plethora of free options that are already implemented and relatively bug free and efficient.

They also don't have an in game web browser either... Maybe they should add that so you could browse champion.gg, op.gg, and lolskill.net.

Not for me, I'd just turn them off. That's exactly what happens in lots of games I play with voice too. Only like 25% of the people on the team would be using it so we just all end up turning it off and using chat instead.

And the final state of communication is made worse than what we currently have.

Everyone, at some point or another, has entered a game where the rest of their team is on voice chat. It's not uncommon in these situations for there to be no pings whatsoever. What do you think is going to happen when everyone is on voice chat instead of playing without it? That's right, pings will fall by the wayside, and when you mute someone you're cutting yourself out of tons of information.

... how does that even make sense? Eastern teams have the same lack of built-in communication.

Yes, that's how they've been coached to do it! Many teams have one shot caller, and when they call who to target everyone else starts repeating it to drive home "hey, ignore the other thing, get with it and focus this guy!"

You mean, it'd just be a new gateway for people to call each other terms involving hatespeech or vulgar language otherwise, and be far harder to monitor.
