Can we get some kind of ping tester in the client before we join a game?

Because I average 60-85 ms (east coast life) and I never dropped below 300 last game. I had spikes almost to 1000 ms every 10-15 seconds. My internet is 100% fine and running as usual, so clearly the riot servers are having issues (what a surprise). I'd like to know BEFORE I join a ranked game where I am in promotions that the riot servers are shitting the bed so I don't waste my time. I don't really think that's much to ask from a multi billion dollar company; if your servers aren't working as intended at least let the players know.

Open your Windows Start Menu

Type "cmd" (without apostrophes) in the Run box and hit enter

Type "ping 216.52.241.254" and hit enter in the Command Prompt window

Let it ping the server, then look at the final results of Min Max and Average ping

This will be a good indication of what you'll get in game. Servers will change but it shouldn't be much different than this.

If you want to continuously ping (rather than just 4 times) the server for a longer test, type "ping 216.52.241.254 -t" instead. Press Ctrl + C when you want it to stop.

You say your internet is "100% fine" but it doesn't sound like you've done any sort of troubleshooting to actually determine if that is the case. You're more or less just putting all the blame on Riot without checking your end.

Don't you think if there were an issue with the servers that they would be flooded with users reporting the issue? There would be a Riot announcement detailing instability on the servers.

Maybe you should consider a wired connection over a wireless if that's what you're using or perhaps check your internet connection to make sure it is stable. Maybe reach out to your ISP and see if there's any problems on their end? Make sure nobody else is sucking up the bandwidth?

The instant gratification people in this community think they deserve is absolutely absurd.

Just use your computer and test the ping yourself. Simple solutions to simple problems.

I just play an ARAM before to determine if it's a good day to play League. Most of the time it isn't. D:

I set a custom game up with myself and a bot to determine if my ping is within reason. I only ever do this when im away from home and using my mobile networ though.

On another note, I've never had below 100 ping. I average 105 at home and 135 to 145 on my mobile network. East coast... :/

Agree, sometimes I check speedtest.net and the ping is normal there, in game it's shit lol so that doesn't help me much.

Holy shit 60-85 average? I get 90 on average.

65-80 is east coast life? I live in Nevada and all my friends get 80 and pay like 30$ a month :P

the key problem with all of this is you shouldn't need third party software, to do something that should be a feature. Particularly when that function is in the game client, but not in the air client

Gati7/15/2015, 6:29:36 PM1 votes

I really don't see why this is getting down voted.. what is the harm to be done?!? like a number in your client is going to ruin LoL. Really, someone please tell me why people down vote.

Sometimes my internet derps, sometimes it's their servers. But everytime my ping is high, I want to know before I go into a ranked game, seriously, if ur Ping is high in one of those, your fucked

The issue is that League is hosted on a server farm. The client doesn't know which server your game is going to be hosted on until your match loads up and sends out a request to an available server and connects to the first one that has availability. Even going into a bot, custom or ARAM match isn't an accurate way of determining if the issue is actually an issue on their end, it's only an accurate way of seeing if the issue is on YOUR end, which is much more likely.

1000 ping? Sounds like someone else in your household is also on the internet and probably on youtube, netflix or downloading something. Rarely is latency an issue on riot's end. Did you check to make sure nobody else was using the internet or that your computer wasn't downloading any updates?

Klockwerk7/15/2015, 9:23:53 PM1 votes

Valkyrie Witch's post is a good way to check your ping in general before the match starts.

However, I think a good alternative suggestion to this based on the fact that you don't know which server your match will be assigned to is to display ping in ms during the champion select screen. I'm not sure if the server has been assigned or not yet at that point, but if it is, it would be nice to know up-front. I would rather dodge a ranked game and lose some LP than go into it with 500ping and screw over 4 other people. In all honesty if this is able to be implemented why not have a system where if your ping is something absurd you have an option of leaving the queue, with a once a day limit so it can't be abused?

I want to be able to see other players ping also. So many people complain about lagg but are they really???

iainB857/14/2015, 5:28:23 PM1 votes

As far as I understand Riot will connect you to different servers on game launch, so there's no real feasible way to know part of your connection is shitting the bed on the way there until that choice has been made.

Not very well thought out by Riot, but what do you expect when we're all still using a legacy Adobe Air client for match making.

HighKingOfSkyrim7/14/2015, 8:27:56 PM1 votes

Good idea!

This way some of those friends who start a game and then have super high ping all the time would actually have a possebility to fix this BEFORE the game!
