Braum vs monsters

Why doesnt Braums E interact with the directional damage from monsters. there is nothing is his tool tip that says he doesnt interact with monsters it says he blocks and reduces damage from a direction so why when pointed towards monsters who do damage he doesnt reduce the damage taken. whether its for himself or tanking for an ally
