So when exactly are we going to see less reliable defensive spells?
Riot has spent an inordinate amount of time and money on making everything offensive less reliable (except for right click ADCs of course!). The idea that offensive spells must have a level of counterplay has been taking root in riot's balance philosophy easily since sion's rework.
Assassins were essentially destroyed with the idea that they must have "counterplay" and were only propped up afterwards with the advent of absolutely breaking armor pen with the release of lethality and its items.
Mages were also changed to have more counterplay.
The ADC class update, well... That didn't do fucking shit and is pretty much the only time where riot went completely contradictory to this wonderful new balance philosophy they have regarding counterplayability on spells.
Well, speaking in overall terms, offensive spells and CC and what-not are quite a bit less reliable than they were a couple seasons ago, so the only question now is, when exactly are defensive spells from champions like janna and lulu going to be made less reliable somehow?
A good example of a skill-based defensive spell is lux's shield. It's like other shields with regards to its purpose, but it's actually a SKILLSHOT!!! The enemy can do SOMETHING, namely, utilizing CC (particularly displacements) to prevent them from getting to the wand for the shield.
But there actually is no counterplay to champions like
who literally and point and click on their allies all day long to give them free stats.
There's a reason why these champions are considered "Braindead" and that's because their purpose is able to be fulfilled mostly if not entirely through AFK clicking on whoever they want to help.
So what's it going to be riot? Will you carry over this philosophy (which honestly is not bad, we should strive to have some level of counterplay for things) to defensive spell-casting, or will enchanters still be braindead? When I had heard that janna was being reworked I was actually excited that they might do something, but then was disappointed when I realized it was just a botched as fuck mini rework that hardly changed her playstyle.
