Let's talk about the Current Ranking system vs the old MMR one
So a friend of mine and I were talking about DOTA and how they use the MMR rating for your rank as a system. League once upon a time also used this before switching over to the current system.
The current system has pros and cons and the old MMR system has some pros and cons as well:
Current Bronze > Challenger System:
Pros:
= Security from tilt streaks, if you are at the bottom of a division you can't really go any lower unless you go on a MASSIVE tilt streak.
= Big accomplishment threshholds. (wow I finally hit diamond, etc.)
Cons:
= some matches can literally have no downside (0 LP, sheltered from dropping) and will result in people not caring for that match = promo series can be exhausting to go through over and over when you are hovering closer to your own skill level. (went through 9 promos myself to plat this year on another account) = less motivation to climb once hitting certain threshholds. (diamond V for example, or gold V people may just say "well im at my elo I want, ill stop now")
MMR System:
Pros:
= every game matters as every game affects your MM = a very accurate reflection of your skill level (current system has too much fluctuation = climb is linear and straight forward, you won't have to go on randomly large win streaks to climb the ladder (i.e. no promos)
Cons:
= no security from tilt streaks. if you tilt you are going to absolutely fuck your MMR and lose a lot of it in that time = accomplishment threshholds feel shittier as they are reaching a number you can lose almost immediately after getting them
in my opinion, while they both have their pros and cons I think the MMR system's benefits greatly outweight the current ranking system. You have a more accurate rank, way less pressure to go on massive win streaks to reach ranks (you have to go on a streak to get into a promo in the first place then win your promos). It's more accurate and your rank is constantly in flux. this means every game in rank is important to everyone resulting in higher quality matches. the accuracy of the rank is the biggest one to me. there can be a big difference between a hard stuck player in gold V who essentially gave up after reaching their goal and a player who is still trying to improve in a similar range. players who give up and lose most of their games will lose their Gold status as their MMR will have an immediate result.
The downsides are there aren't as big of wow moments and if you tilt off the face of the earth you have some work to climb back up. what do you guys think?
do you think the MMR system was better or the current ranking system is the way to go? or is there even ANOTHER system you think might be an improvement over either.
