Toxicity and why I will look for fun elsewhere

My friend group and I have recently been having a lot of discussions about switching to a different game when we are all looking to play a multiplayer video game together. Normally, I come to League's defense as I enjoy the competitive nature of the game as well as the strategy that is involved.

However, somewhere along my 3-year journey through the rift, I forgot what it felt like to have fun while playing a game. I can't come to League's defense anymore.

Last night, I watched the dev video on position ranks and in my first game I got auto-filled support. Looking to prepare myself and embrace the new changes around the corner, I took on the role with gusto and played Soraka. Within 5 minutes into the game, I was getting flamed by my adc for taking exhuast. The last time I had played support, exhuast was the spell to take, so I took it. Apparently it was such a bad decision that I warranted my adc attacking my mental state.

A few more minutes into the game, our top laner died to a gank when I roamed top to help. This resulted in the top laner calling me about every racial slur invented to date. My adc and top laner fed off of each other's toxicity and soon both were typing continuously.

At this point I had politely stated that I had been auto-filled and was trying my best, and I legitimately was. I ended up 1-12-26, which I thought was reasonable for a game where our team got steamrolled. I know what it looks like when someone is feeding, and I certainly was not doing that, in fact, I got a higher rating after the game than two of the other players on my team.

Post-game I reported the two players and tried to recall some of the sexual and racial comments made before I had muted them. Of course, who knows if any action will ever be taken. The reason I am here at though, is that I realized yesterday, if I actually just want to sit down and have fun playing a video game, League is not for me. I I can't look in the mirror after playing a game of league and convince myself that I'm a better person because of it and because of the games toxicity. It's a hard truth, it's a painful truth, especially for someone like myself who has played for multiple seasons and hundreds of games per season. but it's a truth that I am coming to recognize, and yesterday became the epitome of that enlightenment.

League has failed at addressing their most prominent flaw, the in game toxicity. Riot rolls out patches left and right, but none of them address this toxicity. They roll out an honor system, but most people would just be satisfied with a more active and a more accurate reporting system. I have no want to continue playing a game, where I can spend 30 minutes of my life being told that everything bad that has walked the face of the Earth is due to my Soraka support play. Only to know that my report will go unread, and there is a high chance I will experience the same toxicity next game. I've enjoyed parts of the journey, but enough is enough. If Riot won't take steps towards making League a toxic free game, then I am not going to take steps to avoid playing other games.

There is always toxic people. Only thing that is different with League is that you are stuck in game with them and if you decide to quit because of people like that you will be punished.

Big Bad Dog1/23/2019, 2:51:50 PM14 votes

In cases like this just mute the other player. The reason he was losing was actually probably because he just kept typing. If you mute him you wont see it and generally they will get bored and if not you can't see it anyway. Also even though reporting doesn't always feel like it works keep doing it because in honesty it does. Generally just one punishment is enough to reform most players. Hopefully you guys either find a different game or stay here in league. Either way good luck :)

Doesn't matter where you go, you'll always have some toxic people.

LoL, DoTA, Overwatch... every competitive online game has a toxic side to the community.

Gargle Manjuice1/23/2019, 3:32:01 PM7 votes

Have you forgotten about the mute button?

Didn't your adc flame you for not searching up summoner spells and for picking exhaust at the same time? I don't care about summoner spells, unless it's double heal bot lane, that's biased. Toxic players, always find an excuse to blame someone else just to make thenselves feel righteous and better.

This game has been intentionally made toxic by the balance team and Riot as a whole. People rage at each other due to how unfair the game has become. No wonder toxicity is getting worse every season. One game of League is enough to make you wanna smash your keyboard.

This game isn't worth your sanity.

Wow, everyone upvotes these kinds of threads.

If you find something more fun than League with a great community, I'm all ears, cause I wanna get rid of League also.

Zooperstar1/23/2019, 8:56:54 PM4 votes

League is always going to be like that and don't expect it to change anytime soon, we all wish it could change it for the better but with toxic players like that(including me) it doesn't seem very possible. All I have to say is if ur not willing to mute and you can't take the heat your gonna have to step out of the kitchen. That's just how it is.

Tulare1/23/2019, 2:54:29 PM4 votes

I'm sorry that you had such a rough experience last night. If you decide to give League another try, you can come play with me and my friends. We're extremely relaxed and usually strive to be overtly positive.

Galaxyburstz1/24/2019, 1:03:32 AM4 votes

Wait a second, you're telling me that you can be 2 shot by a carry support Pykeitem 3142 Brand item 3285 Zyra item 3151 Lux item 3089 at 20 minutes or completely denied a laning experience by some trash unbalanced champion Pantheon summoner 14 But the reason your leaving this game after 3 years is because of some toxic incident...

Don't worry I'm not judging...

I do hope you stay with playing League, but if not then I wish you luck in finding another game that you enjoy more than League.

If you want suggestions on fun games to play with friends. Depending on your taste of games, I think that you should look into games like Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Lethal League or maybe even Monster Hunter World/Gen Ultimate or wait until Anthem comes out and grind on that game with your friends.

I suggested ones that are challenging and competitive but also don’t really have any way for you to encounter toxicity. In my knowledge, SSBU and Lethal League (both original Lethal League and Blaze) don’t have any chat system, MHW/Gen Ult and Anthem are PvE games so you and your friends can have fun playing against AI and just have a good time in general. There is most likely more out there that might be a better fit, but for the mean time I suggested some of my favorite games to give you something to start with.

(Btw you can ignore these suggestions, you don’t HAVE to play these games that I suggested)

IMHO, exhaust is still better than ignite. If I notice my support ally taking ignite, I will go something like heal exhaust myself when bottom.

I'm going to be blunt...there's nothing wrong with telling other people they are wrong. Especially when they aren't face to face with you looking to intimidate you. If you don't want to fight them, guess what, you don't have to. You can mute their pings. They can't even steal your courier like they can in Dota 2. If you want a team strategy game, I don't think HotS or Dota 2 will be the answer either. LoL has the least toxic community of the three.

Best of luck to you! If you're looking for a MOBA like League then your only real options are DotA 2 and Smite, although the later is definitely in its grave. While the former is still similar in toxicity, it's mostly because of voice comms allowing the flamers to be more upfront rather than being similar in numbers, at least in NA the toxicity isn't too bad, it's usually the EU servers that you hear all the toxic stories from (there are also a lot of Peruvians who have migrated to the US East and West servers, so a language barrier becomes very common in many games).

If you're looking for something like an FPS, CS:GO and Rainbow 6:Siege are still kicking good, and from my experience the toxicity isn't really there nearly as badly as League.

Garry's Mod is good for it's sandbox and wide-variety of playable modes created by the playerbase, most notably are Prop Hunt, TTT (Trouble in Terrorist Town), Hide 'n Seek, and The Hidden.

Sid Meier's Civilizations V (with Brave New World and Gods And Kings DLC's) or Civilations VI are good if you guys want a strategy alternative. These games take upwards of 12-hours to complete, which you can play over several sessions. It's a nice one to hop into games with your friends and just chill with some engaging mechanics.

For an MMORPG, Warframe is currently the community favorite, being a Hack 'n Slash/Horde Shooter style game with an very active developer, community, and artist base. Although for this one I'd recommend finding someone who knows the game to show you around, the beginning is a bit of a turn off for many people. Ask them questions ALL THE TIME! Or read up on a lot of guides and look up any questions you have.

Hopefully this list helps you at least somewhat!

Because Riot's workplace itself is toxic, why would you ever expect their game to be clean?

Not to mention all the toxic streamers who we allow to make an influence on the players of this game, who we all to continue to represent this game.

  1. They have mute everything buttons.
  2. Get over it. (ignore it)
  3. Use the report button, it does occasionally work.
Ritoslostfkboy1/23/2019, 7:56:22 PM2 votes

Ya just int, afk farm side lane is the best option if they wont ff/ open or you can quit on go to another account.

Myrddin1/23/2019, 4:39:42 PM2 votes

I'm just going to say confirmation bias on your part

I rarely ever get toxic players, even when making new accounts, maybe 1 in every 10 games.

Zardo1/23/2019, 5:07:46 PM2 votes

The closest games to league he similar issues with toxicity. Smite and dota are both extremely toxic, and hots is pretty much declared dead by blizzard themselves.

I'd recommend trying out paladins and overwatch. They're different games sure, and they have toxicity, but it doesn't impact gameplay quite as much as they do league.

If that doesn't work for you, I'd try playing FPS games, csgo is a typical gold standard, but I find battlefield to be more fun to play with friends.

Phieldworker1/23/2019, 5:25:13 PM2 votes

I do think reports work. Every time I report someone I get that sweet sweet instant feedback.

Also you don’t have to put up with other’s abuse. You deserve the right to ignore it via the mute button. Every time I get someone that is suuuper chatty in chat or are exhibiting toxic behavior I just mute them. No reason to subject your brain to their craziness for 15-40 min of your life. Yeah they might do other things but just mute pings or whatever else. You have the tools to block out these people so you can actually enjoy a game.

Starcraft243ver1/23/2019, 5:52:12 PM2 votes

The system is quite good, i'm actually getting a feedback for my report after every single game sessions these days.

Karfuss1/23/2019, 5:56:59 PM2 votes

Can relate. I got reported, as a Jungler, by a 3 man premade as toxic despite not saying anything all game. They proceeded to take every single camp and contest me, even with smite, on every buff spawn. Clearly looking for a reaction.

Later find out, in the post-game chat, that the reason I was "toxic" was taking camps and buffs within my own jungle. Not because I wasn't ganking, not because I wasn't trying... But because I was taking my own farm. Me, my own premade (who was questioning what on earth they were doing) and the enemy team laughed so hard.

Now I have a very thick skin (comes from playing the Jungler and Support roles, I'm quite masochistic in that sense) but I refuse to believe this was their first offence for so blatantly trolling and being quite possibly the most toxic premade I've ever had the misfortune to play alongside. And although completely anecdotal, it's a testament to how toxic this community CAN be and how ineffective player behaviour systems are at curbing their behavior when it rears its ugly head. I wouldn't be surprised if they went to troll in 20 other games before it catches up to them, and I pity each and every one of the 40 (or 140 if you consider the enemy team) other players. Some of whom will probably get punished themselves for reacting to them.

AgroFiretruck1/23/2019, 6:28:45 PM2 votes

I support your endeavor to find a less toxic community. It’s unfortunate that the toxicity is so bad it even shows on a legitimate thread.

Raven Redeemed1/23/2019, 8:54:27 PM2 votes

I don't want to dissuade you from quitting if you're not having fun, but realistically there will be toxicity in any competitive PvP game. Riot does more than most in fighting toxicity between automated punishments and the honor system. Of course, it's not remotely perfect, nor will ever be unless they decide to invest in an AI that can detect what humans consider toxic and won't make false positives. No company would have the resources to fully deal with a player base so large without an extremely strict system that would falsely punish people, or disabling chat altogether.

That's not to say it isn't possible for them to do more. Personally, I'd feel better if Riot gave use "report cards" that indicated what percentage of my reports resulted in a punishment, put a player on watch, and were considered a false report. I agree that sending a report can feel useless sometimes.

I've been playing this game on and off for something like seven years, and it's perfectly clear to me that the behavior of the players is heavily influenced by the design of the actual game itself. People will object, "how does the game design cause a player to say words like #!&&@% or #@&&*!?" The particular behaviors aren't important, though--the psychological effects (and their averagely predictable outcome, given only a handful of options for the human player) are.

MikeJ122O1/24/2019, 8:02:11 AM2 votes

I recommend muting the people who complain and don't offer any useful suggestions in-game. It's on you if you want to report them after the game is over with. I have reported people in the past and they received punishments. Try not to catch the toxicity that people through at you and stay positive so you can be a good influence on your team.

Every online game has toxicity in it. Rocket league, fortnite, call of duty, etc. I experienced some level of toxicity in those games., whether it be me making simple mistakes or wrecking the enemy team to death scorewise.

YambrinZ1/24/2019, 9:43:29 AM2 votes

mute all is your friend....it will literally help you climb too if you understand simple map awareness. then, if its a close game you can unmute if you need to see information.

Kaisha1/24/2019, 3:19:58 PM1 votes

The game is toxic in its design. No amount of reports, honor system, or silly rewards will stop it. The endlessly overused excuse that 'all games are like that' is just not true. While you can find toxic people wherever you go if you look for them, in league its easily 50% of the player base, not the 0.5% you find elsewhere.

This is because the game rewards and encourages selfish and unsportsmanlike conduct. Any other sport a goalie or defense man gets a goal and they are praised, in league a support gets a kill and its 'kill stealing'. The whole snowball/item accumulation means you fight more against your team than you do the opponent, which is why people verbally attack their team more than they do their opponents.

The toxicity is inherit to the game design, the only way you can escape it is to leave the game.

UrFieryDoom1/24/2019, 6:39:44 PM1 votes

Whhhhhat...... you actually care about toxic people which are not part of playing the game and in your case 'doing well' BIG PICTURE: while it may itch to be called horrible names, it doesn't affect how you play and your respect towards players.[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]
