An Explanation to Cho'Gath's buffs.

Some people seem to be confused as to why Cho'Gath is being looked to for buffs with his ult generating two stacks upon champion kill instead of one. I cannot fault them for this, especially in those who were not around for the previous round of Cho'Gath nerfs and the purpose behind them; it is mainly for them that I make this post, but all are welcome. I will say that this is not a post defending whether Cho'Gath needs or deserves buffs/nerfs, merely as an explanation for why this particular ability is being looked at as it is.

In the past, Cho'Gath's ultimate actually had a consistent cooldown regardless of whether it was used on an enemy champion, minion or monster. However, due to this, there was a predominant playstyle wherein Cho'Gath would forego stacks almost entirely in the early game in order to just harass the enemy laner. That's right, Cho'Gath would just walk up to you and ult you not because you were at low health, but because a crap ton of true damage is pretty damn hard to deal with and it would often force them out of lane, especially owing to his comparably short ult cooldown.

To combat this, Riot wanted to emphasize the early ult stack mechanic while disincentivizing using it to just random trade: they greatly increased the cooldown on champions (making it something you don't want to use at the drop of a hat) while putting cooldown reduction in it so that it would function more or less the same on monsters or minions, preserving and rewarding the playstyle of building up stacks.

And it succeeded. Cho'Gaths stopped running up to enemies just to ult them to harass... but the gameplay swung a bit too far from using it as a finisher. You could kill the target, certainly, and while it was certainly a good chunk of damage and useful for that end, you would also be indirectly punished by effectively halving the rate at which you gained stacks.

Riot's currently looking to making kills on enemy champions grant two stacks instead of one to retain the meaning behind the original nerfs while removing the indirect punishment they had incidentally included. Cho'Gath still can't use his ult to just harass but gets more or less the same number of stacks than if he had been using it on minions or monsters. Another option they could have taken would be to have its cooldown get reduced upon enemy champion kill, and that they specifically did not do this (to avoid it being so often up for trades and all-in's) speaks of their intentions and goals with this change.

I think people are more concerned with his heal over his stacking. The heal gives him more utility than he needs (IMO) considering he already has built in sustain in the form of his passive. Right now it looks like they're just overloading his kit by adding a heal on his ult.

Thanks for the information. I think an unavoidable 500-900 true damage should involve decision making and probably some trade-off. It doesn't need a buff.

Yeah, trading harass for death isn't a toxic mechanic at all.
