It's hard to differentiate Wardens from Vanguards in some cases, the Tank Update must address this.
Vanguards are the "offensive" tank subclass, they have insane engaging tools and multiple ways to go in, force CC on the whole enemy team and allow their own team to follow up. Their weakness is that they lack defensive capabilities and therefore have trouble getting out once they've gone in, on top of not being very great at peeling for their team.
(mega)
are considered to be Vanguards by Riot.
Wardens on the other hand are exactly that - Wardens. They have trouble engaging for their team and pursuing enemies with their CC but are excellent at defending and peeling their teammates, shutting off enemy engaging attempts and forcing attention on themselves instead of their allies.
( considered Warden/Battle Mage Hybrid ) are considered to be Vanguards by Riot.
And while there are some examples that I definitely agree with - Amumu and Malphite are definitely Vanguards while Tahm and Braum are definitely Wardens, there are some examples of champions where the line is definitely blurred.
Let's take
. I mained this guy for a while and while doing that he didn't feel all that much like a Vanguard to me, rather a mix of both a Vanguard AND a Warden. Unlike most Vanguards, he could not only do sick engages with E, flash, ultimate or a combination of the three, he was also extremely good at getting out of the fight by spamming his Q at chasing enemies and bellyflopping all over the place, making it hard for the enemy to catch him. He also could use his tools to peel like a boss for his allies. Enemy assassin jumps your team? E-ult goodbye. Rest wants to follow up? how about a slow in your face. He's not just a Vanguard, he's also a Warden, a mix of both.
Compare that to
. He also has a sick engage tool with his ultimate E-combo, doing really high AOE damage for a tank, putting himself in the midst of the enemy team and CCing them all at the same time while forcing attention and damage on himself. But unlike Gragas, he sucks at peeling and also has trouble getting out of the fray. He is reliant on getting his big engage off and when he isn't able to, he's just not a good pick.
Or, compare it to
. Braum is a good at protecting his teammates and peeling for them, he literally has a shield that forces enemy CC and damage onto himself, his Q slow and followup stun will give his allies a chance to counter the enemy engage, on top of every near enemy being knocked up by his ult if the need arises. He also has the ability to jump to one of his allies and and give himself and them extra resistances to protect them. Yet all this also makes him terrible as an engage tank. His ultimate and Q are so conditional and forseeable that they can't be used as reliable tools to get into the enemy team and CC them for his allies, on top of his W and E really only having defensive uses.
I think Braum and Malphite are good examples for what a tank should be but something like a Gragas isn't. Braum and Malphite will always have the clear weakness of either not being that good offensively or being that good defensively, making it much easier to balance them around their strengths and weaknesses. But since Gragas doesn't have these clear weaknesses, it's super hard to balance him around that, making him either great at everything and overpowered or mediocre at everything and well, mediocre.
I know the main goal of the tank update is to make Vanguards more skill-oriented and more than just their ultimate but I would really like it if you also focused your efforts on making all Vanguards actually Vanguards and all Wardens actually Wardens, not some mix in between.
I've mainly talked about
but I'd argue that
,
,
,
and
have very similar problems.
