Breaking through ELO Hell!!!

ELO hell is tough, believe me. I've spent the last 3 season's trying to get out. I've managed to break through and reached a comfortable position in gold. For us, ELO hell is silver, Bronze 1 and 2. It get's harder the closer you move to gold and for good reason. Game knowledge get's greater, and builds evolve from strictly damage to more utility. So it's important to understand that what worked in bronze, will not in lower silver and what worked in silver will not work in gold. Simple isn't it, but how come the general population struggles to bypass this fairly easy gap.

Ego, Happens to be one of the biggest issues. Your not alone, I wanted to be just like faker's zed, or insec's lee sin. Yet, in order to succeed I needed to humble myself. Their professionals for a reason and My skill level is not even in the same category. That's OK, what I happened to have going for me is a calming attitude and approach to each game. I do not think of myself greater then any opponent or team mate. If you must know, I often report players who are egotistical. I have a strong dislike with players who are exaggerate, spiteful and over zealous. Whether it's victory or Defeat. If your like me I tend to play ranked games in series of more then one. Staying humble toward my teammates and opponent's leaves me free from harm. So I'm not projecting automatic defeat when first blood is given or we loose the first 2 dragons. Then when My team mates are negative or opponents are cocky, it takes no strain on my emotional state. Giving me a greater chance of doing what my team needs to win. Which is carrying!

Carrying is not measured by Penta Kill's, having ridiculous KDA's, or doing the most damage. Carrying means that your accomplishing a task needed to help your team become victorious. My KDA with ezreal and lucian is way above par, but my win rate's are lower then 20%. Tho, I am destructive to say the least, I'm not winning. So therefore I'm clearly not carrying my team. Games like this happen once in awhile, and Never happen 4 or 5 times in a row. Miss Fortune Carry, 99.6k Damage to champions. Being a Damage dealer isn't going to carry every game and there are a lot of people who will look at this game and notice my exceeding strength, but the truth is that the Leona is the reason I was so destructive and stayed alive long enough to do the necessary damage to win. Her presence in lane, picks and pressure on other lanes allowed me to exceed over my opponents. Those are things** I could not,** do on my own as a Marksmen, Mid or Top Laner.

At this point I hope you've grasped two very important concepts. Your emotional condition will effect what type of responses you make in the game and carrying is creating events that lead to victory. If you've died 4 times, lost turret and are chilling top hitting cs. Feeling depressed, thinking your going to loose or raging at your jungler. You've just missed that split second, were you could TP bot end up trading 2 deaths for 3 kills, picking up a drake and taking two turrets. All of which can happen in less then two minutes. Yet is created in one second. That's the impact of a top laner who gets destroyed in lane, but managed to carry their team to victory. This happens more often then someone getting twenty kills in a game.

So my success in climbing elo was with supports. Supports were I can force my opponents to move were I want them, pressure them away from objectives and create picks that result in power plays. Power plays that result in drake's, buff stealing, baron's, turrets and ace's. I had more success in gaining victory with a clear head and a pool of "Worthless" champions, then I did with my above par Vayne mechanics. Crazy how it took me 3 years to figure that out.

So if you play a good riven top and can manage to cs like a champion. Thats amazing, but your still not climbing tiers. Try playing a support, preferably one that isn't known for crazy amounts of damage. Try experimenting with champions that can create scenarios that result in complementing and defending your team mates. You'll rarely get the thanks or approval of others, but you'll see how you manage to climb tiers above players you presumed were better then you. Lets say your in bronze 2, and your friends are in lower silver. You'll notice how you managed to move from bronze 2 to silver 3 in a couple weeks and they remained in silver 4 or worse fell to silver 5. They continue to think that they must play one specific role that requires doing massive amounts of damage and sadly haven't moved up or are limited to growth. Yet, you've seen exceedingly positive results.

So, then when you play riven top your idea of whats important changes. Your not afraid to sacrifice your own turret to create a power play in another area of the map. That results in a couple kills, a drake and turret. You will loose a small amount of cs immediately, but your selfless act has dispersed gold to everyone. As you return to lane maybe the opponent is 45 cs ahead. Well, since the turret is gone waves of minions will build and you'll have an easier and safer time farming. You can push the lane safely knowing that their turret will prevent any large flow of minions from building and that the lane will automatically reset in your favor, every time. Your cs will begin to get closer or ahead of the opponents and you've been able to safely maintain presence on the entire map. Which, you can read about or watch in a video, but will not fully understand until you main supporting for awhile.

I know there will be a lot of push back and that my explanation is very limited. I will try my best to summarize everything. AFK's, D/Cers happen once in awhile. But seem to happen to egotistical players more then calm players. So this excuse isn't why your still in bronze, or silver 4 or silver 3. Or so forth and so forth. It is a hazard that everyone deals with. I've also had it happen numerous times in a row and felt that an injustice was done on me. Yet, remained calm and managed to play over 150 games without being relegated to a lower tier in a division.

You don't need an upbeat personality, but if you remain calm your likely to have more success then being negative. You will not tunnel and you'll make decisive plays that flip the game in your favor.

Now why do you have to play support to learn that? Because your not going to learn this from watching a video or reading a guide, even like this. You need to learn from first hand experience, when your not focusing on cs. It's amazing what you begin to notice. You learn how to bait opponents abilities, How to prevent them from placing defensive wards and allowing yourself to place aggressive wards. You'll begin to understand zoning more and prioritize toward important objective control and unnecessary objective control. You'll help others get gold, and not just yourself. Then you'll notice that your team is stronger, not just you.

Good little guide man! Add a part where you advise playing sober lmao, didn't climb any damn LP last night :(

Silver 4-3 is about where I can't get past while drunk and high which always bottlenecks me. Playing video games completely sober is such a strange thing for me

Nice post. I especially like the parts where you emphasize keeping calm. Also, I'll add some advice:

  1. Don't treat promos as special. Realize that you may have to play a few hundred games to climb to your rank. So don't treat any game as being more special than the others. Instead, you should always bring your best game. For the same reason, don't get overly emotional about a win or a loss. Even a win or loss streak of ten games goes away after you play another hundred.
  2. Focus on getting better. The win or loss of a game is insignificant compared to how many games you will end up playing. The most important things to focus on with each game is improvement. Wins don't make you better. Getting better makes wins.
