How does New player's daily play awards work ?

I chose Catherine in the first mission and I played as a marksman, nothing happened then. I unlocked no award at all and now it came to day 2, I cannot even see a selection for today's mission..... Could anyone tell me how this actually works? Have I missed a chance to unlock the free champion forever of this account....
