My discussion to you:
You think you have it tough?
Listen up. I can just about guarantee that you will take what I am about to say offensively, and not even listen to half the shit I have to say. How can I prophesize this? I've preached this gospel to tens of thousands of individuals in my moba gaming career, and rarely anybody stops to listen to what I have to say.
"So I play fairly good" There are about 1.5 million players between your rank and my rank. If you were placed in Bronze, that is probably where you belong. And i'm not saying that you can't climb out of it, i'm saying it's going to take you a while - and that isn't anything you should be offended about.
Yes, the community will say "You're bronze trash", who fucking cares what the community says? As you pointed out, it's a toxic as fuck community in the first place. Am I a child pedophile? No. If someone told me I was, would I get offended? Of course not. If you aren't "bronze trash" why the hell would that offend you?
When I first started playing in the moba gaming industry, I was playing DotA in 06 or 07, I can't remember. I loved my Warcraft 3 Tower Defense games to death, and avoided DotA like the plague. Yet eventually it began to basically flood the entire Custom Game list, so thus I tried to play it, and I enjoyed it.
1: It took me 2 years of playing the game before I figured out you got gold from farming creeps. Naturally, there was an option in the game to turn on health bars of units, one that is defaulted off. I thought it was by mere chance that I got the finishing blow, much less that it benefited me in any way.
2: It took me ANOTHER 2 years of playing the game, before I figured out that you could kill your own minions and deny the income to the oppoents as well as the experience. I was mind-blown.
3: Somewhere between this, I joined a competitive in house league called "DxD - which stands for Dota extreme domination." This league single handedly, housed some of North America's greatest moba gamers ever to exist. If you are interested in following up on this, they have since renamed their clan to DRD (Dotally Rad).
4: These players were so far above my skill level, that I got my ass handed to me - again and again and again and again and again. Yet they taught me some of the core essentials and mechanics of playing the game at the competitive level.
5: I kid you not, I was at one point in time, the second worst ranked player in their entire league. It got to the point where nobody would even want to pick me up in a match because they were afraid of losing. Thus, I believe was the end of my DXD career.
Do you think that made me give up? Hell no, it made me try even harder. And I went insane (and just recently came back, rather). I joined a 5-man premade at the local internet cafe that I only went to, to print of some resumes for work, and I saw people playing DotA there. The guy s there and I, played so well together that we basically had a 95% win ratio. We RARELY lost. And then we moved onto Heroes of Newerth, and that game drove me insane, yet I studied it and played it to the best of my ability. I rose to the top 5% worldwide. TOP 5%! From the 2nd worst ranked player in the DotA gaming community, I rose to the top 5%! I mean holy shit, that's what I call a fucking improvement.
Here I am now, I placed in Silver 2, I got kicked around down to Silver 4, and slowly progressed up. I must have gone back and forth for several hundred matches before I even made it to Gold 5. SEVERAL HUNDRED. And the same thing to get into Platinum, SEVERAL HUNDRED.
The message that I would like to get out to you, after my history of moba gaming story...
You are the ONLY person that is holding you back. Never believe you deserve better, WORK for it. You know how many times i've been badmouthed to? I've been called EVERYTHING under the sun. Half the time I just reply to people and tell them the truth. I've been called a hell of a lot worse, by a HELL OF A LOT better. I have played with the BEST of the BEST. I fucking played with mYm for God's sake, and those guys will kick you so far off the map you won't even be able to FIND your way back.
What I have recently discovered, is that attitude is everything. Less than one month ago, I was Gold 3 or Gold 4. And coming to realize that my attitude is the most game changing offense in the game (and I will tell you why in a second), I climbed 150,000 places in the North America ranking system. As I said before in another post, I ALWAYS had that skill. I haven't individually improved my skill level for a LONG time, so I always had the opportunity to advance. It was my attitude that was holding me back.
I truly inspire you to watch some LoL inspirational videos, and I will send some very good links at the end of my post. I guarantee you, from a personal perspective, that WATCHING people play the game will improve your individual ability by at LEAST 25%. That isn't something you can afford not to pay attention to, I encourage you to take the time to watch some high level game-play.
Why is attitude game-changing?
I have been recently studying this, primarily the effects of criticism and self-esteem.
If you badmouth your allies during a match, you're going to learn;
1: They are MUCH LESS willing to cooperate.
2: They are going to be MORE worried about the harassment they receive.
3: They are going to become LESS skilled over time, because they are spending more time dealing with the harassment, then they are improving their individual skill.
Now if you build the self-esteem of your allies;
1: You're going to see the climax of what they are capable of doing, because they're no longer worried about having to deal with harassment.
2: They are going to be MORE willing to cooperate.
3: They are going to become MORE skilled over time, because they're actually using the time that they're playing the game to advance their own individual and teamplay abilities.
They may not be facts, but if you have any doubts, I encourage you to study the behavioral effects on criticism and self-esteem.
Here are some strategies I think you might be able to improve on. If you need any tips, or any further advice on any of these, feel free to ask me and i'll explain them to the best of my ability.
1: Give up your favourite position, and play what nobody wants to. - Example: "main jungle, will fill." (If i'm the 5th position on the team, i'm very unlikely to get my role, and it's quite possible that the people above me are better at it.)
2: Bite the bullet / suck the "you know what" - so to speak. You know how many times I have INTENTIONALLY put myself on the front line, so I am the PRIMARY focus fire target? Hell, I can't count that high - there is probably NEVER a time where I don't put myself on the front line so i'm the primary focus fire target. Sure it gets aggravating, but this is a PvP game, somebody HAS to die. And I would much rather my team put their trust in my hands that I can lead them to victory with the craziest gutsiest initiations they have ever laid their eyes on. And I get harassed to hell if I make a mistake, who cares - fuck them and their shitty attitude.
3: Be an AMBASSADOR for the fight AGAINST toxicity. - I'm no Saint. Riot will most likely eventually permanently ban me (if they haven't already) if they continue to see a refusal to reform my attitude - thus i'm trying to change. I am trying to be the change that I wish to see in this world. If someone's giving another person a hard time, tell them it's not going to help you all achieve victory, but to achieve defeat.
The guy might go on tilt if you continue to harass him, nobody wants that. Now this is probably the most difficult thing to learn how to do, and I might not be able to teach you how to do it. Each "ELO Hell" is different, and to overcome your specific "ELO Hell", you have to figure out what the problem is that you are dealing with, and find a solution to overcome it.
One of the most common things you will probably come across is, everyone thinks they're a God and yet they won't be willing to participate as a team. My guess is, if you build up their self esteem, they will be much more likely to participate as a team, and thus your odds of winning skyrocket.
Blah, let me know if you want me to follow up on anything but this post has gone on long enough. I'm infamous for my walls of texts.
Anyway, here are those videos I think you'd be interested in seeing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjIJEWS3Ntg - The first 20 seconds of this video will make you shiver. You'll come to feel a rush on both sides of this, many times throughout your gaming career.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxAabW7JfTQ - This is the video that inspired me to become an ambassador for the fight against toxicity. I will watch it, and listen to it five times in a row before I jump into a ranked game. It pumps me up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9diFg82JwE - One I just viewed today actually, but i've watched and listened to it over and over again until the message sunk in.
Join with me against the toxic community, and let's help them help us make this community a better place.
