You sure can. I went from Gold to silver last season due to a massive losing streak. It was stupid and pointless though, I ended up stomping my way back to Gold right away. The matches were a joke. Complete dis-service to those who were trying their hardest to climb through the ranks of silver and left me wondering why the system continued to allow me to drop to such a bad level.

"Demotion" exists in all MMR/ELO. Once you reach 0 LP of any division, doesn't matter if it's Diamond I or Bronze II, if you keep on losing matches then you enter a hidden Demotion series (the opposite of Promo, though I am not sure if it works the same as one just flipped with focus on losing rather than win), which if you still keep on losing, you will be demoted into the division under your current one. The only exception to this is ofc, Bronze V, which is the bottom of all MMR/ELO and impossible to be demoted from.

Also this is just an additional FYI: In ranks below and including Gold, there is also no "LP decay", which means you will not drop your LP from being inactive over a certain period in ranked mode (28 days?). If you are in Plat or above, you must keep playing ranked to prevent the decay from happening. Once you've decayed enough, you will drop your division, I think. EDIT: Correction - Only Gold 5 and below are protected from decay.

What basically has to happen is your MMR has to fall to the level of a bronze 1 player, which seems to take a while to do but it is possible if you lose enough games

yes and it happens already before you can see it via your mmr, you will be put up against bronze players

Demoting Silver 5 to Bronze is harder than demoting Gold 5 to Silver but it is still possible. if Gold 5 players mmr drops to Silver 1 mmr, they will drop to Silver 1. Silver to Bronze protection is higher then others. Silver 5 0 point will tank you until your mmr reach to Bronze 4-5. However if you drop to Bronze, your mmr will pull pull you down until Bronze 4-5 (You will start to see 25-30lp loses per lose, 10-15lp gain per victory).

Basically, we can call Silver 5 0lp is undefined Bronze player.

If you lose enough in a row you can demote.... however you cannot degrade. So if you don't play you won't fall unlike gold 4 and above.
