Neeko's W on turrets Works or not ?!

I played with Neeko twice in a row.the first game my W passive( Every 3rd attack deals bonus magic damage...) worked on turrets and dealt more damage to turrets every 3rd attack.The second game,the passive just didn't work at all while attacking turrets even when the 3rd attack was ready it didn't trigger. Can someone explain why ?!!
