Tips for lower elo players who are confused about climbing/seeking advice
Will just start by saying I'm not Challenger or anything. I peaked at low plat last season and haven't been playing ranked really since then. My account was perm banned so I'm back on my original, this one, and have just started playing ranked again today (currently 5-0 I believe.
- Just to give quick back story because I know you'll look up this account-
This was the original account I had used when I first downloaded League. I was like any other new player and levelled as quickly as possible and jumped into ranked immediately. Got B5, unsurprisingly (and deservingly so) and couldn't get out. I got mechanically better but didn't have the game sense to climb out, so I made a new account and got placed in I believe G5. I played for a bit and was eventually banned -
I've learned a lot since then from watching the occasional pro streams and just naturally coming to understand how to play the game. I've played enough over the past 2 years to understand every position fairly well. My macro for jungle pathing is nothing crazy but I do know a few routes. So, I guess I can just throw some tips down. If you have lane specific questions just leave a comment. I've played a bunch of everything. I usually only have 1 mastery page that I create before every game for my champion so I can help w runes/masteries for any champion.
BEGINNING -------Before you start, you should understand whether you want to climb or whether you want to improve or do both. If you only want to climb to Gold5, Plat5 etc then you can honestly just play 1 champion like Annie over and over again until you just understand how to win most/every lane and in time you'll climb to your goal. You can also just simply play flavour of the month champions and cheese your way through the ranked ladder. If you want to improve, then you will climb slower but once you learn the game better the climb should get easier. I personally think the latter is the more rewarding/fun option------ Potentially one of the most important things in the entire game is CS. CS can give you a massive advantage or keep you in the game. If you have 200 cs at 22 minutes and you're 1/2/1 but your lane opponent is 7/0/2 but they only have 80 cs you're actually up by around 800 gold (depending on shutdowns). If my math is wrong this will be embarrassing. (I'm not saying kills are worth nothing. If you see you have lethal or enough to get them out of lane then go for it, but don't overextend) There's nothing wrong with being a LITTLE selfish. Your teammates in for example Silver 4 probably won't care a ton about farming so if you see an empty lane pushing towards you soak up the farm. I highly suggest you spend a bit of time practicing last hitting with auto attacks and/or spells in a custom game. If you typically have 80 cs around 20 minutes a good goal to aim for would even be something around 140 (this is better than most low-mid silver players will have anyways) So, a very important "tactic" I guess is your recall timings in the early game. Recall timings are important because they're an easy way to get an edge on your opponent, even if you just have an extra Doran's ring you also got to fill your resource bars. If you're in an aggressive lane and you know your main opportunities to recall will be after kills or getting extremely low, shoving the wave (typically pre6) and buying a piece of your first item can give you a huge edge for as long as you're in lane, since as soon as they leave you now have the pressure to shove the wave, which will deny cs and give you time to roam/help your jungler/clear jungle camps etc. SELECTING YOUR CHAMPION is one of the very first things you do when joining a lobby and the choice is quite important. Mid/ADC are a bit more standard as to what you can/should be picking whereas support/top/jungle all depend heavily on lane matches and team comps. Remember, playing carry jungles isn't always the answer. If graves is very strong then go ahead and play graves, but I'd highly suggest playing something tank/utility based like Gragas. I really recommend you stay away stuff like Yasuo top (or even mid). The flashiest champion isn't always the answer. Quick suggestions list:
Top:
Jungle:
Mid:
ADC:
Support:
The goal with these picks is to provide good utility and stats to your team without playing an overly complicated champion when that's completely unnecessary. I've been asked by friends about champions like Shen
and Sejuani
and they're perfectly fine (forgot to add
. Frustrating to play against, easy TO play, aggressive, tanky etc). The only thing I should say about Shen is make sure you have good map/game awareness to understand when to ult and who to ult onto. If you're dying to be more aggressive, I can also definitely recommend Wukong/Vi. High damage, frustrating, tanky etc.Quick disclaimer about champions/roles: I do believe you can climb at different speeds based on your skill level and role. Smurfs for example that are Diamond will typically just play a high damage carry champion in gold because it'll be much easier for them to win the game because they're much better than their enemies. You may want to consider role swapping based on your desire to climb AND improve. (Your enjoyment is probably the most important thing though)
POSITIVE COMMUNICATION . I was/am a toxic player. I think I'm getting a lot better now at not flaming teammates and it's already decreasing the amount of stress I have in game if my team is feeding or I'm performing poorly (or any other stressful variable).
Communicating positively may seem useless but tilt is a very real thing and can cause players to intentionally feed, disconnect or just have no focus on the game and what they're doing causing them to play even worse (flaming will tilt you without even realizing it) In champion select it doesn't hurt to ask your support to play something different or for them to give you the choice out of their most comfortable champions so your team comp/lane will work better. If you're in a bad lane then ask your jungler to pressure the lane and cover when you need to recall (this is also beneficial to the jungler as they will get xp/lane cs) If 2 or more of your teammates are flaming each other there's not too much you can do. Just try and remain calm yourself and play the game like normal. Tell them to mute each other. I don't really have any other tips on teammates flaming each other.
**SHOTCALLING/OBJECTIVES. ** With the new dragons they're very strong, along with Baron and Rift Herald.
If you have the opportunity to take dragon [early game example] with your bot lane then I recommend it. I also recommend ganking lanes for the sole purpose of applying pressure so that you can secure objectives. Pushing bot lane out and making them recall means you get a free dragon.
If you're the jungler and you or your top laner are a tank/bruiser/duelist I highly recommend attempting to get Rift Herald if possible. Odds are you won't be able to do it before around 14 minutes since it's very strong but the buff is quite good for someone who's diving into the fight.
BARON CALLS.. This isn't as intense in lower elo, but Baron calls are still important. If the game is close [lets say around 30 minutes] I advise you type to your team and you try end coordinate a pick on the enemy jungler. With no enemy smite to contest, baron SHOULD be free. If you have/are an assassin/burst mage I'd also recommend you sit in a bush near baron and kill anyone trying to interfere. Mages/Assassins don't do insane amounts of damage to the big objectives in the first place, so you might as well protect your teammates that are doing it. I highly suggest you don't attempt baron or elder dragon if the enemy jungler is alive. If your team can melt baron then you can attempt it if the enemy jungler appears on the other side of the map.
SO, I'm gonna stop typing now because I don't even know whether this will come across positively or negatively. I'm just trying to help make it slightly more competitive in lower elo's. I don't think people in silver/gold/bronze can actually appreciate a truly competitive game of League so I want the lower divisions to become more competitive.
If you have any suggestions to add on, go ahead. If you have questions, feel free to ask.
This took a bit to type so if you agree with what I'm saying an upvote would be great so it sees a slightly larger audience.
I can make another post about lane specific tips if there are enough requests.
I haven't seen a post like this on here in quite a while so I figured I'd go ahead and post one.
Apologies for spelling/grammar errors and any messy sentences. I'm sure I'll find them eventually. I also tried to word things fairly well while also going semi quickly.
THANKS! :)
