What do people/Riot think about making league role-based versus position-based?

As it is right now almost everyone seems to focus positions. People in solo queue main positions, LCS players have certain positions (even though they don't always play in their assigned position) and even seems to balance champions by what position they are mostly played in.

This obviously works just fine, but as League evolves I think maining a certain role over a position offer more possibilities. Mages will know exactly how to position in team fights etc., Tanks will know when to engage and Assassins will know when to strike. Since they have mostly done just that.

You can look at it from another perspective as well. Top, Mid and Bot have barely any differences. It's all about last hitting and harassing your opponent. Jungle is slightly different, because you fight jungle monsters (and they fight back) instead of standing in lane. You could argue that the jungler needs to gank, but you could leave that to others and cover their lane in the meantime or counter-jungle and deny the opposing jungler. And last but not least the support position (!!!), which to me is that person that helps you getting through laning phase by sacrificing some of his or her own income.

This shift is sort of already happening, but instead of focusing on a role people tend to assign roles to positions (i.e. mid = Mage/Assassin, support = Tank/Mage). In LCS however they start to switch around positions somewhat, but they haven't really made the step yet. Personally I'd love to build a team myself around this, for the lack of a better word, strategy(?).

Anyway I wanted to see what people think of it. It might just be to early or perhaps it is happening (slowly) as I described above.

Thanks for reading! :)

I like this idea, but I also like the uniqueness of how each lane seems to have it's own mechanics. Also, I think that it separates, LoL from DotA and HoN which I feel are much more role based like you are asking for. I do however think that there's a lot more room for variety than people think. There was a post about a month or so back about different duo lane combos that could be used, while putting the ADC in a solo lane. I think this should be looked into more, as we already see the re-emergence of the roaming support strategy with the solo-lane ADC in the pro scene.

I think the main issue with trying to get more people to experiment is that the LoL community as a whole, myself included, has an obsession with competing and competitive play. Because of this, people don't want to try-out new things because they aren't used to them and don't want to risk losing because of it. They would rather lose on their own merits, playing the style that they know.

It's this mentality, that I think is holding back LoL from having the uniqueness of other MOBAs in compositions and gameplay style. People's unwillingness to try new things, change, and adapt. There's a reason why Dawngate's tagline is "Break the Meta"

There are more possible roles compares to positions. How do you resolve that? Also what about the fact that meta is designed around positional thinking.

Postions top mid adc support jungle.

Roles Tank, assassin, fighter, CC mage Nami , Dps mage(Cassiopeia , burst mageSyndra, Ad caster, ADC. Some people think bruisers and fighters are different so you could have another one their.

Because the only 2 things a team in league actually needs are a marksman to deal safe, high, sustained damage in teamfights, and a tank to peel for the marksmen/ engage for the team.

No other role is essential to league gameplay, and while there are 6 roles, and only 2 of them essential, you cannot balance the game around it.

The other thing that being balanced around lanes grants is the ability to see difference of role in a lane.

If suddenly adc's became worthless in a teamcomp, and assassins became priceless, you would prob see every team going support and assassin botlane to get the assassin fed.

The issue I have with this is that positions are mostly static, where roles are meta-dependent.

LCS caliber mid laners for most of this year have not had the luxury of playing assassins, even if it fit their personal playstyle (largely due to changes to heal and exhaust). If the competitive meta doesn't suit assassins, LCS players have very little success with them.
