Let's Talk Ziggs

Season 3 when I started playing LoL, one of my first and favorite champions was Ziggs. I like skillshots a lot, because accurate movement prediction is rewarded with powerful ability. I mained him in Season 4, where he rose in popularity during the waveclear/ stall meta. The problem with him was that he could make games that were seemingly one-sided stretch out to a full hour sometimes, becaue his Q could clear the wave of the lane he was in, while R cleared a neighboring lane.

The nerfs to him included lowering the detonation range of his Q. When Riot realized that his in-lane harass wasn't the reason he was too strong, they also increased the cooldown of his R to 120/120/120. This stopped the bandwagon.

I fully agree with the R nerf. Ziggs should have to make a decision if he wants to clear a wave top or save it for teamfights. However, the nerf to his Q detonation range is now a lingering, annoying smudge on this champion. It doesn't look right visually. Also, many times a bomb will miss not because an enemy dodged it, but because the Q bounced over them unintentionally.

While this may not have destroyed Ziggs (his winrate isn't bad), this doesn't mean that there isn't a problem. Ziggs can still win because instead of using Qs in lane to harass, you simply use them only to waveclear. You enemy laner can't kill you, and you get your farm for items. The hitboxes don't matter much in teamfights because everybody is clumped. Below are my proposed changes to Ziggs to make him a fun and interactive champion again:

-Revert Q back to it's original detonation range -Reduce its damage by half (?) if it hits more than one target (ala Karthus) -Reduce Q's cooldown by half (?). YES, he will be spam happy, but what's the point of Ziggs if not to throw bombs. A damage reduction for poorly placed bombs or easily hit bombs (like if enemy laner is standing in a creepwave) is the compensation, while also not making his damage overwhelming in teamfights. -Increase R travel speed. Bard's R travels WAY faster and has more of an impact on a game. I don't see why this can't at least be tested out. As it stand you cannot hit a dead-center ult unless the enemy is cc locked already (aka probably dead anyway).

These are just some thoughts that I had, and I wanted to see what fellow mid laners thought, as well and anybody from the balance team who may be hanging around. If you have any suggestions I'd be interested to hear them. I just want my old main back. He feels unplayable right now.

As someone who has played Ziggs since early season 3 as well, his problem right now is his reliability. His bouncing bomb is slow and easy to dodge due to its small width. Xerath has more reliable poke and right now I think he just outclassed Ziggs as a poke mage. So I think that reverting the radius changes would be good, but lowering his AOE would not help him because his strengths should always be based on his wave clear and AOE poke. Ziggs also suffered from the athenes nerf, so giving him more spammable bombs wouldn't do much either. Increasing the travel time on Mega Inferno Bomb would be nice, but it is semi-global and already pretty reliable. It's not really comparable to Bard's ultimate since it doesn't deal damage and they serve two different purposes.
