So I got to see volibear beat down an adc the other day

I notice a bad habit adcs have though.

Lucian gets caught and chunked for 90% of his hp. He's got lifesteal I think. whatever.

But he tries to kite voli.

shoot run dash run shoot.

He gets chunked and he still tries to do this and voli gets a kill. Ironically he was panicking while voli's flip was still on cooldown.

People the cooldown on that thing is like 6-10 seconds. Don't stop to give him love taps. Just run. Nerfs aren't really going to stop that. He and several other tanky fighters are going to beat your sorry ass if you try to kite at times when you shouldn't.

Yes I know they tell you to "just kite volibear" and "volibears weakness is that he can be kited" but the truth is that these are simplified answers for weak people nobody really wants to give detailed advice to.

Some more examples, some of which are actually not good ideas

"just dodge the spears" "just get pink wards to stop eve" "pink ward akali" "just dodge the lazer" "just pick X champ" "just build X item" "just bait out X ability"

Volibear's weakness is that he is a low mobility tank with moderate windows of power and his primary defensive "steroid" is counterable. He's also got terrible range. Voli is literally the only tank who can't apply CC or reliably do anything to you at all over a range of 550 (typical ranged attack range and one of those magic numbers like pi in this game) meaning that voli can be countered by walls and roots more easily than other champs of a similar nature.

Volibear's heal is strong. He gets a little under a third of his hp bar back which can be enhanced with items and masteries but at the end of the day whatever he gets happens over 6 seconds and its triggered when he goes below 30%. First lets have a look at this. Voli gets 30% back over 6 seconds, that's 5% per second or 2.5% with grievous wounds. At 4000 hp 30% is 1200 hp. 5% is 200 hp. So 200 hp, that's like undoing one autoattack per second. But then consider the fact that oftentimes more moderately paced burst combos take about 3 seconds. If you cannot outpace that heal its probably safe to say its not so much volibear as it is your team's lack of burst damage if the heal is too strong for you but even if it is on to the next part.

"don't focus the tank"

this is another one of those things people just give you to pacify you and keep you from doing something stupid. YOU CAN AND SOMETIMES SHOULD JUST FOCUS THE TANK.

Lets just give that a second to sink in while you watch the oddone situationally agree with me

Now, part of the reason you don't focus tanks is because oftentimes they can jump on you and do badness... voli cannot do this. It is possible to focus voli. If you can trigger his passive the cooldown, the STATIC COOLDOWN, is 120 seconds. 2 minutes. That's 4 minion waves you have to grow some chesthair and engage the enemy while their tank is weaker than normal. You don't have to chase them or whatever. If you beat up their initator or voli or if voli is both and you trigger voli's passive you can engage them at a later time after preparations knowing full well that the bear is going to be crippled for a while. For you slowpokes out there this is when you start screaming ALL MID ALL GROUP like you know what the fuck youre talking about. If anyone on your team is competent enough to splitpush and to figure out when to do so just let them figure that out and make the decision on their own. You need to round up the dummy nibbling on those wraiths and chide him for being late to the grouping if you have slow teammates.

Next you have voli's speed boost. It has a long cooldown but it lasts a while, he can catch you. He will slow you after. If you see voli and you are alone just get the fuck out I don't care how close you are to the tower. Keep that gap high, if you have no CC then you are out of position under your tower if you can't 1v1 volibear. Don't like it deal with it! nobody forced you to pick some 0 cc zero when you could've picked at least a soft cc hero. Very few champs actually have 0 cc and cc can be built on those who don't have it. No excuses. This thing has a fairly long cooldown even during lategame. Once its down voli loses damage and mobility.

Important: something everyone needs to understand is what voli actually does. I mean sure he poops on baddies but what is he really picked for. One thing voli does in higher level games whether they realise it or not (pros do know this, dunno about diamonds or plats most don't seem to care) is that he effectively increases the reach of champs with strong abilities that have range issues.

One example pointed out in tournament play was voli's interaction with Syndra

flip, slow, syndra can stun or push away or both and she can set up her ult a bit more and maximize her damage on a single target from a long distance.

Other examples are

Malzahar Veigar Akali Leblanc Katarina Morgana Cassiopeia

What I mean to say by this is even if voli isn't fed, if you see one of these or similar champs, like top laners, getting fed then DEAL WITH IT or voli is going to become an even bigger threat.

"hurrdurr why can voli die 3 times and still be useful"

for the same reason you can make weak, inefficient decisions 30 times and still feel like you're winning. That's how it is for the majority of champs not the minority. Stop saying this.
