Can we PLEASE do something about MR itemization?

There HAS to be something done about MR. Either give everyone scaling MR and more of it, increase the MR on all items, or nerf the penetration on Sorc Shoes and Haunting guise.

In combination with Spell pen reds (7.8) Haunting guise (15) sorc shoes (15) Abyssal (20) voidstaff (35%) and the penetration mastery (6%) what's the point of building MR? 20 MR Reduction 41% 37.8 Penetration.

Katarina, Akali, Fizz, Diana, you name it vaporize people right now because Magic Pen items are SO good right now. Why is it that they're able to just negate ANY MR I buy? I can't afford to get ALL MR vs a team with one AP. Kat just kills people people before ulting them. All she has to do is Q Shunpo and Sinister Steel and any carry dies.

Can something PLEASE be done about Penetration. It's seriously becoming a problem.

My solution is to make Sorc Shoes 5 MPen, 15 is too much for a boots option in my opinion. 15 negates half of the base MR of any champion that doesn't have scaling MR (Which every champion should have in my opinion considering the state of MPen...). Guise should be 10 and then upgrade to 15 and who knows what to do with Void Staff..

Katarina is especially cancerous with the power of MPen. And I don't think it's the champions fault because these champions can be shut down and taken care of but if they get one or two kills ahead they begin to vaporize enemy teams and it's not fun.

I hate having to ban Fizz, Akali, Kat every game.

if you nerf magic penetration there will be 0 point in picking non-OP champs that rely on it aka Zyra or Brand or Elise

any magic penetration nerf will 100% destroy those champs, and they are not in a good spot anyways

Scaling MR doesn't make sense in general, as there are two champions in the game that get AP per level:

Galio - who gets it from his passive that converts MR to AP, and he has MR scaling Viktor - who gets it from his passive that is actually an item

Armor per level exists because AD per level is standard to all champions. It stands to reason AP champions should get AP per level if MR is given per level.

A complaint about item 3020 requires us to look at how Armor and Magic Pen items compare:

item 3134 - The base Armor Pen item. Builds into two variations, item 3071 anditem 3142 item 3035 - Provides percent pen.

item 3136 - One of two base Magic Pen items. Builds into item 3151 item 3020 - One of two base Magic Pen items. item 3135 - Provides percent pen.

It's worth pointing out that the passive on item 3151 only helps a handful of champions. Consequently, if you don't use the passive on item 3151 , you either need to buy item 3116 so you can, or give up on that item path all together and buy item 3020 . If you really need another type of boot, then your only pen item is going to be item 3135 . Meanwhile, item 3134 has two options you can build it into. Neither comes at the cost of your boots.

I'd love to see item 3020 replaced with another item that builds off of item 3136 .

item 3001 is an interesting item in that it gives offensive stats for a damage type, defensive stats against the same damage type, and reduced the enemies resistance to said damage type. My best guess for why there isn't an AD equivalent is it would likely be a mandatory rush item for ADC's, which is the only place where you are guaranteed to see two AD champions fight against each other. While it is a powerful tool for an enemy Katarina, it's also your AP champions best defense against her. I think it's worth keeping in the game.

**TL;DR: **I think all the problems you see with Magic Pen would change drastically if item 3020 were replaced with another item that built off of the item 3136 . The rest of the items can probably be left alone for now.

How is mag pene different than armor pene? I mean, you start out with, and scale, 0 AP anyway.

The tradeoff is they build 4 entire items (rather weak ones by themself I might add) just to counter penetration, meaning their actual damage is going to be rather low.

I'm a mage main, so here are my 2 cents on the issue at hand.

The major overarching difference between AP and AD is that AP is generally tied to burst damage and CD-based poke, but AD is generally tied to sustained damage. This mean that when an AP champion unloads their burst onto you and you are resistant to it, there is very little that the AP champion can do after that, but AD champions in a similar situation (even AD casters), can continue to AA to make up for the damage lost because the bonus AD also strengthens their AAs. In other words, the damage lost to armor can be made up by fighting a little longer, but damage lost to MR lacks any real way to make up for it. Remember, mage AAs suck... it actually takes focus to last hit minions unlike a lot of our AD brethren.

Also please remember that most champions take MR glyphs, so in the majority of cases, 15 mPen is not half of the champion's MR.

In regards to itemization, the mPen itemization actually sucks imo.

  • While item 3136 is nice, the item it builds into, item 3151, is very niche an produces less damage for most champions in most cases than other items.
  • item 3001 is incredibly niche as well. Let me tell you, the last place that most AP champions want to find themselves is in the middle of a fight, but this is the only place that this item's passive works because most AP champions out-range the aura.
  • You are right about item 3020 being a strong one-size-fits all item, but it comes at the price of being one of the most expensive boots. On top of this, most AP champions are more focused on their offense than their defense, so the other boots look and feel lackluster to them. item 3158 is not a tempting boot eacher because of the oversaturation of CDR currently.
  • The only one I'll give you is item 3135. It is a bit too general purpose at atm, and too cheap for being too general purpose. However, the AD equivalent, item 3035 shares the same problem.
