Gnar Help

So, I played my first game of Gnar recently. I was up against an Akali and things were fine. I mean i was up 40 cs about the whole game and always had her poked down and eventually got the tower, but I never felt like I could kill her. Even when I was up a full item It never felt like if I went in I would win.

Just wondering if Gnar player's ideas about gnar's engage damage. I mean I know he has a lot of cc, but just plain damage? Especially against 1 item assassins that have a lot of mobility?

He's better at poking tanky champs since the passive of his W deals max health damage, which isn't nearly as scary when used on assassins who already build very little health anyway. Akali is also very tricky to hit anyway and has no real reason not to dodge your boomerangs.

He has good consistent damage, but nothing in terms of burst.
