Zyra is a catcher, but she sits right on the edge of being an APC mage.

- Damage Dealers
Catchers tend to be played support, ranged damage dealers tend to be played as farming laners. The champions like Zyra and Lux who sit next to the gray area between these groups can be easily shifted between groups based on the runes and items that a player builds. This gives those champions a flexible playstyle where the player can choose to become a catcher (support) or a damage carry (farming laner).
If
or
take aftershock and build
+ (
or
) +
, then they become supportive catchers.
If
or
take comet and build
, then they become damage dealing APCs.
I don't think Zyra or any of these other flexible champions should get reworks to try to force them to pick between support or mid. Instead, their dual nature should be embraced and their different playstyles should be made to emphasize player choice. An example of how Riot could emphasize player choice is by buffing Aftershock (and other resolve keystones to keep them equal) and font of life, slightly nerfing these champion's earlygame damage in their kit, and then making it so that comet triggers on minions affected by hard CC thereby restoring waveclear. That would open up more opportunities for high-CC champions to take resolve and specialize more fully into being utility-focused supports, but it would keep the option of going mid lane available if the same champions choose to take sorcery instead. [If comet triggered on hard-CCed jungle monsters, it might even open up the option of picks like Zyra jungle.] The same champion kits can be fully functional in both roles, with distinct playstyles and strengths (not too much damage as supports, not too tanky as mid laners) depending on player preferences. This is the ideal solution instead of forcing flex champions into a single role.
