Aurelion Sol as a Tank?

Now that Aurelion Sol has been officially revealed it seems that he is meant to be a mage, but looking at his kit I think he could serve the purpose of a top lane/jungle tank.

His passive together with his W looks like it will have synergy with sunfire cape, so you'll be doing even more AoE damage even if you haven't built too much AP. His Q together with his E sound like they will make for a great initiation comparable to Amumu or Sejuani (Without even using an ultimate). Riot suggests that Aurelion have a beefy frontline as a teammate, but why not make Aurelion himself the beefy frontline? Finally his ultimate looks like it could provide strong disengage.

I think he could work well with full tank items plus a rod of ages and maybe an abyssal scepter or rylais. What do you think?

I don't think it really synergizes with Sunfire Cape since that seems to be a little too low of a range even for Sol even if he's building tanky. Rylai's seems like a must, though, so getting hit by one star makes it easier to hit with the next few. Rylai's then makes Liandry's better and then it seems like you'll be doing enough damage so you can just go durable to keep your stars smacking opponents all fight long.

When you're a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail. When you love top lane, all champs look like top laners.

That's a mid-lane mage or I'm Nostradamus

I'm pretty sure it was stated he was an AP Tank in his reveal.

I think im gonna tale him top. Build him like chogath. Rod of ages, rylias , and then full tank. And if im stomping the game maybe rabadons. He seems to me like a ap jug

Unless his starsurge insta-clears a wave I can't see him working as a mage. Waveclear is basically sole reason why you pick a mage right now.

I don't think you'll get anything out of Sunfire Cape. Their ranges probably don't overlap so your forcing yourself to choose between one of the other. So it doesn't have synergy with your passive nor with your outward pushing ability. Sunfire Cape doesn't do a whole lot of damage anyway, you'll get more done by building AP.

His AP Ratios are far too strong to build him Tank and his only form of CC is his Q and R, and his R isn't even a huge one. The better thing to do is build him Mage, initiate with a big ol' Q, and then W to deal good damage from afar. The synergy with Sunfire Cape is really not extreme since hardly ever, outside of the Laning Phase, want to be that close to an enemy champion in a team fight unless they are the only ones left. It's better to take advantage of his Passive spell effects.

Tested today with cinderhulk, works pretty good. Sunfire overlaps with his passive, giving him a very decent passive damage, plus, his ulti amd q have a high base damage, so you don't need to build a lot of ap. I noticed a dropoff in ranged W damage arround the mid game (i was maxing q first) before i finished building liandry's torment as second item, but once i got it, it was more than enough damage, didn't even need to buy rylais. If the enemy team is heavy on cc/magic damage, get merc boots and abyssal scepter for the extra mr and damage, as the scepter increases your passive+sunfire damage even more.

Works pretty good, only hard thing to do is manage your W to keep your mana pool high, unless you want to get RoA or Righteous Glory. You can also get a frozen heart to solve your mana problems if the enemy adc is fed.

Works pretty good and gives you better survivability, i would definetly recommend it against an assassin/melee heavy team, unless you want to get pancaked.

We really don't know his ratios yet, nor his AA range, nor his base stats. At this point, he could be anything, from a tank to a jungler to a mid laner to a bot lane AP (with high ratios and low damage increases per level).

Regardless, he looks pretty much like an instant buy for me.
