Any tips for starting ranked?

I have been playing for almost 5 years now (very on and off, took a year and a half break, started back up again this june I think). I've always been intimidated by how much every little mistake gets blown out of proportion in ranked, and how terrible the map awareness is in general ( I will probably be placed in bronze, so especially bronze). The thing is I also don't know yet which I am better at, mid, or support, because I usually stick to aram now. I have noticed when I do play rift, my aram games have helped me a ton with decision making in teamfights. So I was wondering if any of you have some tips/champ/role recommendations that might be able to help me out!

I like janna, sure. I still play ADC from time to time, and think the role could suit me well also. I would have to say my favorite supports are janna, karma, and soraka to be honest. My favorite ADC's are MF, jhin, jinx, ashe and ezreal ( who is not too strong at all atm though). And my favorite mid champs are Katarina, ahri, vel, veigar, lux, and lissandra (despite her not being too strong right now). Just wanted to add my favorite champions in case that helps you give me some tips.

Edit: I used to play rumble and darius top too, which was fun.

Thanks guys! The helpful ones in this community are what make it great.

Don't. That's my advice. I climbed from Bronze V to Silver III a while back, and of my 70+ games, maybe... five or six weren't somehow toxic. Even when we won there was toxicity much of the time.

But if you absolutely must, support is a decent option. Most of the heat goes onto junglers or toplaners if everything goes south. The drawback is having an ADC that might rip your mistakes, but that's easily fixed: Mute at the start. If he needs to guide you, he can do it with pings. Plus, a good support can really swing games in ways no one really sees. So even if you're doing well as a support, the other team is less likely to realize it and focus you, meaning less chance you'll be trashed unfairly by your team.

My advice remains soundly on "don't even start ranked", but if you really must, best of luck to you!

Honestly, don't bother with ranked unless you find yourself doing way too well with normals.

If you don't NEED higher ranked players to have a balanced experience, normals will give you the same exact thing as ranked, except less stress.

If you find yourself winning lane/games far more often than not, you'll probably be placed silver or higher, in which case ranked is a potential avenue for you.

You'll just end up having less fun with the game in general if you don't have the current potential to climb.

If your goal is to improve, you can do that in normals, if you aren't gold+, much more easily than in ranked, to be honest.

The strongest carry position is ADC right now, but because of the tank/assassin meta right now they're also the most vulnerable. In every position you play, when it comes to teamfighting it is imperative the ADC stays alive. Throw yourself in harms way to protect the adc. If your ADC gets caught out and blown up, just play safe until they come back up.

If you want to influence the game the most play jungle.

Mid is the easiest to control the map and lend help with objectives.

Top is the hardest to carry from, but it's also the place where you lose the most games. Bad top laners are a guaranteed throw loss.

Support is the easiest to play in general, but understand you have to play to the level and aggressiveness of your ADC in lane, and teamfights you're still at the mercy of your teammates. So if you get seeded in bronze, you probably don't want to play this position as you'll need to carry the games yourself.

If you feel a fit of rage coming along, just mute everyone on your team and stay out of the comms. It helps, seriously. If someone on your team starts to tilt, just mute them.

You will not find players who possess good mechanics, good solo lane play, and good team mechanics until you hit gold. Most people will be subpar or just awful in at least one of these categories. Very rarely, and usually on smurfs will you find all 3 of these qualities of above average play. So what i'm saying is, there's always gonna be something to critique or bother you. So it's best you don't say anything at all. A bad player is better in a game than a tilted good play, so don't tilt them.
