For those of you just starting your ranked career, here are some useful things to know.

  1. Support and Top are the best places to acclimate to the Ranked scene. They both are mainly played similarly for the most part (tanky with either engage, hard cc, or both). Although if you go damage, the lanes still tend to play out similarly (tanky = passive damage = aggressive). But the best reason is that they tend to be low risk, medium-high reward. Even if you go really, badly negative, as long as you land your cc, you are going to make it through. Second, is that both roles are very forgiving if you have a low cs count. Tank items are fairly cheap and support items give gold.

  2. Make sure you are comfortable on 2-3 champions in at least 2 roles. This will make thing go so much smoother than panicking and locking in someone who you are not experienced on since your main was banned. Also, it gives you some options incase you go into a bad lane matchup.

  3. You should be able to get at least 5 cs/minute at worst in the MID/ADC role. You are expected to deal damage and more gold = more damage.

  4. DO your preliminary 10 games solo. It will make for better matchings for your games if you have a solid starting point. Premades may skew your MMR to either worse or better than it actually is.

  5. Do not get salty over a low placement. If anything, it is a good way to learn how to get better without worrying too much about demoting.

  6. Expect to lose. You are new to ranked. Unless you have been doing normals all this time, anyone freshly level 30 should not go into a match expecting to win all their games. If anything is to be expected, it is that you probably will end up feeding more often than carrying.

  7. Warding is one of the best ways you can contribute to your team's success. Vision is everything. The longer the game runs the more important it is. Also know when and where to place pink wards, especially if one of the enemy's has an invisibility ability like Evelynn or Twitch.

  8. Many players use websites to give them some key info before the game starts. Sites like op.gg, lolskill.net, and lolking.com can tell you many things about your champion and your opponents skill levels. Some even tell you popular builds and skill orders.

  9. DO NOT PLAY RANKED ON A NEW (NEW TO YOU AT LEAST) CHAMPION. It will usually not end well.

  10. Know the META. Just knowing that Champion A is currently dominating whereas champion B is on a steadily declining win rate when in picks and bans can help you achieve that victory screen.

  11. Read the patch notes. Not being aware that some champion was buffed or your main was gutted can be a very rude awakening when you eventually find out in the middle of the game.

  12. Have fun and good hunting.
