Need Support Advice

Hello everyone who has taken the time to read this.. I have an question which may be cleared further through this forum.. As a Support, what is the MOST important goal when in a PVP [Blind Pick or Draft]?? I just finished a game, and My ADC kept directing me to Attack the Other ADC, thus leaving me open to be attacked by the other support. My main goal is to keep my ADC alive and pump him or her up so he or she can do the damage and get those kills. I don't feed on the minions until my adc champ partner is well stable and I start attacking minions once we need to get moving. I poke Champions off and on so my ADC partner can kill them. I try to be as much supportive as I can but... now I'm not so sure if what I am doing is correct. I am not the best LOL player Ill admit it.. but I am trying to pvp more so I can get better. But off and on I get confronted with a ADC partner that does nothing but scream commands and puts me into positions which causes the opponents to feed. I know how important it is to let the ADC feed, and get gold so they can purchase the necessary items. But it is OOBER hard to concentrate and do my job as a support.. when I have a ADC partner trying to Ping Direct me. Or Chat in a bullying manner. It is horribly discouraging, distracting and above most.. does not help me LEARN and develop to do better.. it makes me worse. I know I should suck it up.. but I want FUN out of this game, not just a chance for someone to share their bad day with me. May I please have some support advice? Also.. I've noticed ADC's come in two different categories, ones that want a aggressive Support that can take On both ADC and Support.... or one that wants there support to simply stay back, let them feed.. poke champions a few times and then resume protection. Which one is better?

It depends on the ADC. For example, with KogMaw I prefer to play really passively. It depends on the ADC and the person playing too.

I'm a Plat 5 ADc main so I may be able to help. I'll just explain the goal of support since maybe that's the difficulty you're having.

Your ADc just needs to be put in a position where they can scale properly into the mid and late game. In lane, what you need to do is punish the enemy ADc for walking to kill the minions and protecting your own ADc from the enemy support. Different supports do this in different ways, but the general goal of passive supports is to help your AD scale well into the mid-game by protecting them with your zoning and abilities while they control the wave. Aggressive supports try to look for openings and force hard trades and all-in's so that your ADc can get a lead in the bot lane and snowball the game from there.

Here are just a few tips that might help you:

  • Don't take the ADc's minion kills, their builds are expensive unlike a support's. From your post it seems like you do.
  • If you see an opening (enemy adc over-reaches for a minion kill, starts tanking minions, etc.) then take it and ping him so your ADc will follow.
  • If you gain a lead, zone the enemy bot lane and tell your lane partner to freeze the lane.
  • if you fall behind, protect your carry and play near your tower
  • keep wards to protect from jungle ganks

I'm not really good at explaining, but if you watch pro players play support you'll come to understand what it takes to play the role. Ideally, a good support will control the lane and give the ADc room to farm while looking for chances to win trades versus the enemy bot laners.

Good luck!

Depends on a lot of factors, especially which champ you're supporting with. But generally, you aren't going to win games playing entirely passively. This isn't WoW, where a healer can entirely undo an enemy's incoming damage. ADCs during the laning phase want to farm as much as possible with ideally as little interference as is reasonable. A support that can create a buffer for their ADC by poking the enemy ADC and/or the support is going to serve their team very well in the late-game.

Take Sona, for example. Sona has both a strong poking Q and a decent healing/shielding W, but you simply aren't going to out-heal incoming damage in an efficient fashion. A competent ADC will out-damage it, and you'll run out of mana quickly. By frequently poking with Q and her passive, you can hurt the enemy ADC enough to make them play passively and miss CS, while your own ADC gets all the farm unopposed. It'll work infinitely better than hanging back and trying to "protect" the ADC.

In solo queue, it's all about the aggressive support that can get the snowball rolling. I primarily play Braum and run a rune page with 11 AD and 18 armour (Been using it since 2014) so I can just big dick people, force fights and start feeding the ADC's little tummy. His E's damage reduction really lets him go full aggro, and W'ing minions that are about to die is a solid way to suddenly force a trade (A procced Braum passive is a won trade 90% of the time, and since people are so scared of it being procced more often than not they don't even fight back and just try to run)

As a bonus Braum's one of those champions that doesn't need to be particularly coordinated with his team and can jump in and do his own thing and immediately control the situation. The ADC can be as dumb as he likes, your shield's still gonna be blocking for him and you can reliably CC with your ult and the like in contrast to say Tahm whose W if poorly coordinated will lose fights. You don't lose much pressing the ignore button with Braum if people are being wankers :P

First, aggressive and protective supports aren't really better than one another. The only distinction you should make between them is what fits your personal play-style the most. I'd rather have a support who is comfortable with the champion than a support who is playing a champion that fits the team better but can't play it.

Second, by playing a support you like, you are more likely to have fun. It's a strange thing, but I notice a difference in my attitude when playing my main (Morgana) versus playing any other champion. My experience with the champ enables me to find more enjoyment since I can focus on new goals over worrying about how my adc wants me to play while managing how the champ operates.

Third, play the game how you want to. This is the tricky part because many people get frustrated, rage/become toxic, and/or troll in games. Ultimately though, we all are playing a video game. We all love video games. That's why we are playing this game despite its reputation for a terrible community at times. From the description of your game, it sounds like you're worrying too much on how to best fit in with the team and be the most perfect support in the world. Don't put so much pressure on yourself! _Take time to enjoy your individual successes. Laugh at funny mistakes. Be happy with your play. This is the most important goal as a support for me. _

Enable your carry, disable theirs. Don't just pick one, try doing both.

Though if you really have to pick one, go defensive. Your other teammates can do the offensive work, since that's more likely their jobs.

Also, don't let ONE or even a FEW ADC players get in your way; you should keep in mind that roughly half of such players don't really grasp the concept of duo bot, so taking suggestions from stupid people isn't the best way through. And that I wouldn't worry about that because getting shit from teammates despite you knowing that you're right will happen on an everyday basis; it's something you have to get used to and laugh at because you're smart and they're not.

I'll also be open to answering any support-specific questions, excluding tanky-support exclusive ones.

It depends on who you're play as, with, and against. There's no definite answer. Go aggro with a draven, go passive with a Caitlyn, and dodge the lobby if it's an ezreal. Also, don't give into bullies. Let them rage and rant all they want then just type "you done?" when they stop typing.
