AP loves gold just as much and 
with a support keeping him safe just seems like a good idea.

I think the real problem is that people will flame you for not having the same turret taking power as an ADC. Which is why Ziggs among any of the mages is actually acceptable bot lane.
Personally, I would try mages that already find their way into the support role, Specifically Brand. His kit works when he has lot's of targets to work with, which is why he found his way into the Duo lane to begin with. Give him the lane gold, and he should end up being a force to be reckoned with in the teamfight.
