Taric's early game mana is frustrating

I'm a support main. I play lots of different supports. I used to main Taric before he was reworked. He is sexier now, but I honestly don't play him nearly as much since his rework last year. But once in a while, there are still those niche games that I will play him in, and I feel like his true potential is realized at around 25 mins when he has item 3109, and possibly item 3174 or item 3025. Before that, I feel extremely weak and vulnerable especially against poke lanes.

I feel like a lot of this stems from an unbalanced feeling for how much mana Q and W cost compared to the healing/shielding they provide. Other supports have similar mana costs and efficiency to taric's 3-stack Q cast, but they don't have to wait for 45 seconds for three stacks for the same efficiency, and they also typically have higher base mana and mana regen rates. I know he's tankier than those supports as a trade-off, but from an early game sustain standpoint, I would much rather have 2 more mana regen per second than 5 more armor, and his obvious preference towards item 3302 where those other supports can go item 3301 or item 3303 doesn't help the mana situation either.

I think all that needs to be done to make him more viable is to give him 25 more base mana and 4 or 5 more mana regen per second at lvl 1.

I wrote some posts about it (or at least replies to posts about it) in the past. Mana is the only thing that holds Taric back, it is his effective gate. Due to his passive his CD's pretty much don't exist, and since he has the tankiness to survive burst (which is the normal counter to health sustain) the only way left to gate him is mana. If his mana wasn't heavily gated he would just run rampant.

Having it be his Q cost is actually quite intelligent. It can still be used to provide sustain without crazy mana costs (The 3 stacks value for an AOE heal is pretty on point with the mana cost) but in extended trades if he wants to keep his passive going he has to spam it a lot without getting a ton in return for it. By placing a high mana cost on it's charge system it punishes his mana pool if he wants to trade frequently (Since that is where being a tank with good sustain gets out of hand) but doesn't murder his mana if he just uses it at 3 stacks.

Mana is the only thing that actually gates Taric, since he can heal when low and doesn't have any real CD's. He also can shield himself when he needs to walk up to get his CD's back by aaing, and it itself helps reduce his CD's because he cast another ability.

That being said a slight bump to his base mana is pretty reasonable in that context so I would support that change, if not mana regen/cost reduction on his abilities.

I agree. The way it is right now you get one, maybe two if you space them, chances to fight in lane. You just don't have enough mana for much more.

Because he's one of the champs where if you buff him even a little, pros will use him.

Taric is always really strong, but heavily underappreciated as far as supports go

I used to play him in season 2-5 and I loved him. I even played him top lane in ranked (and I did pretty well to boot!). He was fantastic.

Now he's less fantastic, and only fabulous. He deserves some buffs.

Like, why not make him the most naturally tanky champion in the game, right? What would be so awful about that? What does he do that's so threatening that he can't take more hits? Does he have a hook?

Does he have spammable heals or harass?
No?
Then what's the holdup Riot!?

I've always thought why doesn't his passive give him a small flat amount of mana? 15 Mana back per empowered AA scaling up to 50 Mana per AA. It would strengthen his early game without buffing his teamfighting

I played a fair bit of Taric when he was reworked. For me, he seemed to be held back more by his hilariously low damage output than by his mana pool. I'm hard-pressed to think of a champ that deals less damage than Taric, certainly in melee range.

League is traditionally a game that greatly rewards melee champs for making it into attack range. Even Taric's "empowered" autos feel like wet noodle slaps. It's sad.

Tbh, he was always heavily gated by his mana pool.

I actually think out of all the supports he is by far the most balanced. Sure he has a pretty weak early but that is made up for an amazing late game.

Taric can go item 3301 if you really want to.

TBH I'd take a CD nerf to make his Q or W more actively usable. Prob the Q tho, W I at least use with confidence when I do use Taric since its vital to using his E and R right and the shield is more likely to prevent damage at a reasonable cost than Q.

Taric is fine in terms of mana costs, go play some other support if you want free cost spam spells.

Taric is a tougher champion to play then most people think and is one of the most powerful when scaling. Mana issues arise but only if you spam his abilities recklessly. As a melee enchanter/warden with a heal and a shield you can play him in a way that allows you to preserve his early mana. First, don't use his heal unless you have three stacks. Its a complete waste of mana when you do so. Don't spam abilities to build up the stacks either. Pace your item 3302 procs and if you are pressured under turret get a quick item 3097 for extra sustain. Wait for your chance to stun and punish the enemy when they are slightly out of position and you can land that stun. Once taric gets into melee he can out damage any support and this is when you will spam your abilities. Doing all this may sound simple but its harder then it sounds and takes a lot of practice with Taric to get it right. He can still have trouble against certain matchups but that is a problem of being counterpicked and not because he has mana issues. Would I like more mana on him? Yes but I don't think he needs it.

Damn it's almost like his mana costs were based around a passive that restores mana..and then that passive was reworked.

Lucky for you, Ancient Coin is being reworked to give mana next patch, and Glacial Shroud is becoming cheaper.

:) my dreams have come true.

old taric was just as mana hungry though if not more so

crippler386/2/2017, 4:27:21 PM1 votes

item 3107 synergizes with your ult, synergizes with your shield, syngergizes with your heal, fixes your mana problems.

I play taric too, used him to get into silver 3 from bronze 4, he's too strong late game to not have a bad early.

EDIT: also I suggest maxing e then w.

E because it increases your stun duration, W because it increases both your shield amount and your armor while not increasing your mana costs.
