If you're playing Darius and the enemy team consist of Riven, Yasuo, Kai'sa, Evelynn and Blitzcrank, you do not need a Black Cleaver at all in that match! You're laning against Riven, armor and health are the best things going for you, not damage. So maybe a FrozenHeart/TitanicHydra or RighteousGlory/SteraksGage combo.

If you're playing Yasuo against a Cass/Xerath/Veigar, rushing a Hexdrinker will be more beneficial than getting your damage spike.

If you're playing any mage except Lissandra/Fizz/Anivia against Talon/Zed/Yasuo/Wukong/Jarvan/Vi, your first item should be Zhonya's Hourglass.

Don't complain about balance and champs being broken when you're building Abyssal Mask and Adaptive Helm Galio against a full AD enemy comp! Do you know how stupid you look when your match history shows 0/8 Galio with item 3001 item 3194 item 3111 item 1031 item 1028 against Yasuo Kayn Renekton Caitlyn Thresh

Other than damage, BC also has health, good chunk of cdr and move speed on atk which helps a tanky, immobile champ in many ways.. I would still see BC as a very good starting item in many match ups. I agree though, no build is cookie cutter, it has a ton to do w/ who/what you are facing and having knowledge will separate those who just look at mobafire and those who understand why things are built.

Agree exept on the darius thing. BC isn't just for armor shred, not even just for the nice stat combo, it's mostly there for the ms on him. In contrast to trinity, BC gives bonus ms on every physical damage, includeing his passive, so if he tags you(or a minion) once, he gets a 7sec speedboost which is really important for him to get anywhere in any fight.
