The day Riot made me become an OTP

Let’s go a bit back in the time, when soloqueue wasn’t disabled. By this time I was an all-round platinium 2 player, able to play and win on every lane and every role. I was proud of being at my rank because I was thinking “I really deserve this rank, I’m able to adapt to my team, my enemies, I could have ranked up at every lane with the same result”.

Of course this system wasn’t perfect, a lot of time, people in champ select were fighting about which one will have the toplane, and people going afk just because they didn’t have a role wasn’t that rare.

But I was here, saying “hey guys, will fill!”, Fill, that’s what this post is finally all about, at this time, this sentence made you play were your team couldn’t and it was for me as valuable as (if not more) carrying hard on the same lane every game. It means you were able to play a lot of champs, on a lot of role and not loose, it was about trust and hope, basically my thought was “Hey team, I trust you when you say you’re good on this role, so I’ll just take what you let open, not feed, then I will assist you to help win this game! “. In fact it result in playing everywhere, and surprisingly not so often support.

Then Riot created the glorious soloqueue, the system that will reduce frustration about role and position in ranked. At first I was really interested by the dynamic, I thought it will be fun and I will not see any more people going afk just because they didn’t get what they wanted. Furthermore, I notice the Fill option which was basically made for me, a guy who don’t really want to focus on one role but rather learn and be able to play everywhere.

What a mistake I made… this option is basically a “you're going to support dude” button, if you put fill, you’re support, if you put support at first choice, you’re support, if you put support at second choice (as I always do now) you’re support.

This is a real problem, I don’t mind supporting, I’m not bad at it and I really enjoy playing this role but I don’t want to do this all the time. In fact I decided to put fill at the start of the season, I was support everytime so i decided to change to play something else, so I put Bot as first role and support as second role, and I end up playing only support, I never get my first role because I put support as my second one.

So here are some questions I have, if I put support as second role and I always end up supporting, how many people who supporting was the second choice with the old system, end up giving up with this role because they never got their main role? How many people finally focus on only one role putting mid as second choice to be sure they get their first ? And finally, how many people decided to focus on only one champ to rank up since they discovered that they always got the same lane if they play a bit with the system?

Since the start of the season I end up playing support 90% of the time even thought I never put it at first. I never got the midlane, nor the toplane, a bit of adc and jungle and that’s all. I’ve lost a lot of knowledge about matchup at midlane and toplane and I find this frustrating. Even worst, I think that the system change the definition of what a “good player” is. With the old system a good player was someone who had to be versatile, because the system forces you to play every role and every lane at least once every 10 games. Now a “good player” is someone who is good on his lane and his role and what’s the easiest way to achieve that? Spam the same champion. Or basically, become an OTP. You’re helping those guys ranking up by giving them always the same role with your new system.

So I’m not pretending I have a solution to bring, or that the old system was better, but I think you missed something by resolving old problems. I’m just asking you for an option to not play 2 time the same role, or to be able to play every lane by putting Fill. Please Riot, bring me back to the light !
