How do you learn the lanes?

People say to pick up specific champs to learn new lanes, but how does that work? Wouldn't each champ require you to play/learn something different while in lane due to different kits? Or do they all have similar "rules" like positioning and trading, regardless of champion?

I ask because I'm trying to learn top, mid, and jungle. There are people who say I should start out with this or that champ first as I'll be able to learn the lane better. When I play mid and top, I choose either Qiyana or Akali but from what people have said, they're hard champs to learn -- even more so when I don't know how to play the lane yet, so I should start with a simpler champ (like Annie) THEN move onto Qiyana and Akali. But then that leads back to my question on how that would work.

Who ever told you that doesn't know shit

To learn a lane you need to 1 trick so that you reach a point where you don't think about your champion but the decisions you have to make

now granted every champion plays lanes differently but you don't need to know how to freeze if you only play tiamat champions

for example

once you get comfortable with a champion and a play style you can change it but changing it means that it will somewhat hurt your climb in the short term but benefit you in the long term if climbing is your only goal playing different champions is a mistake

if you are looking to just climb play 1 champion and have 1 other champion that plays in a similar way for backup for instance if you play tryndamere you can pick up nasus or yorick as well as they have the exact same gameplan

To a point, every champion is different, but there are certain elements that are key to winning a given lane.

Top is all about sustain. It's a 1v1 duel and it's a long lane to get back to after you die, so it's imperative that you learn how to stay alive and steadily farm.

A good midlaner knows when to break off and help out other lands around 8:00-14:00.

Bot is all about the role you play; farming aggressively and efficiently as an ADC, keeping the ADC alive and zoning areas as a support, and denying the opponent farm as both.

I'm no expect, so I couldn't tell you much more than that, but there are definitely some things that are universal. Learning a champion as relates to learning a lane, that basically comes down to getting comfortable with that champion's unique toolset and how it helps you do what you want to do in lane. For example, Illaoi's top game is great only if you're good at landing skillshots, because her sustain relies entirely on being able to smack things with her tentacles. If you get good at it, though, there are few who can match her.
