You have to really love that one champion and want to play them no matter what. You don't bring yourself to only play a champion, you have to really want it.

Imo, and this is what I do, it's better to have a small pool of like 3 champions. Last season I almost exclusively played Syndra, but I fell back to Xerath or Malzahar in matchups or games I didn't feel where good for Syndra. Don't get me wrong, over 50% of my games were still on Syndra, but I would never be able to 1 trick her.

its more like one champion 80% of the time, and 3 to 4 other champions 20% of the time.

and the answer is, the champion is really fun to play. plus, the more you play the same champion, the more comfortable you get on him. there are still different champions and teamcomps you face from game to game, and you can change your item builds and playstiles on the same champion.

I have the opposite problem.. I can't bring myself to play multiple champions.

The idea isn't to force yourself to play 1 champion all the time, it's to play whatever until something really clicks with you so you want to play them all the time.

For some people, that'll be more of a thematic click so while they may not necessarily be that good with the champion at first, they enjoy the champ enough that they'll keep at it. For others, they may find they're a natural at the champion and it's the confidence that they'll be able to carry that really pushes them forward, to the point they don't feel comfortable playing anything else at the MMR they end up at. Occasionally it's a combination of both that does the trick, which can push people to hard one-tricking, rather than simply maining whatever but having a few back ups.

I almost exclusively played janna this past ranked season (and much of the one prior to that as well), since I both liked the idea of protecting people and not being kill focused, and the fact I turned out to be rather effective with her. Shes since been nerfed and/or reworked a bit so I'm a little less hardcore into her thematically (where she now wants to be pretty pokey early game), but I'm still rather good at her, and I'm pretty uncomfortable playing a lot of other picks at this mmr for now. I suspect I'd do fine in reality since I've been pretty multi-faceted in normals, but it's a confidence thing.

(That said, I do play an awful lot of ARAM when not playing ranked, so that does a lot to diversify my champion experience. When I'm playing ranked rift though, it's pretty much all janna all the time.)

There aren't too many champs that meet my playstyle requirements, so I just end up playing the same picks all the time.

-They have to be able to jungle -They need to be a good duelist -They need some form of sustain or innate mitigation -They need enough utility that they can fill a support role if needed -Prefer most of their damage to come from auto-attacks -The less dashes they have the better, as most of the highly mobile champions bore me

-Character is rarely touched by the balance team leaving yourself with a comfortable character to learn and master -Character is flexible and can be played in more than one role or build path -Character never receives talk of a rework -Character has dope skins -Character isn't bait for desperate men who seek fictional character love -People aren't willing to learn a character that takes actual skill

It just happens. I love playing Malzahar so I always try to play him if it's not something stupid like ADC or Jungle. Change name to something non-champion related if you feel like people will make fun of your username if you're having a bad game with Kindred, the important part is that you have fun playing Kindred, whether you do good or bad with them doesn't matter.

One tricks wear a shock collar that shock them every time they try to lock in another champion.

People do it because

  1. It's great for your win rate and learning the game if you can one-trick, so long as you get that champ.
  2. Some people just fall in love with certain champs or are freakishly good with that champ and like winning.
  3. The champ is broken and they can play it well enough to abuse the freelo until the devs nerf it.

As for the confidence thing, you just need to play the champ in normals and learn it's limits. It's a lot easier to be confident if you know your power spike at 6 is bigger than the other guys or what ever. If you aren't confident it's because you don't know the champ well enough. The only way to learn the champ is to study its stats and then go play it a ton.

Then don't.

Trust me, you're better off not doing it.

Sincerely, a Lulu onetrick since season 3.

I love how all the one tricks are coming out to play. 94.4 percent of my adc ranked games last season on MF. Mained heavy since season 5.

While the rest of the community is spending time comparing champion winrates, we find a champ we love, then make it work no matter what.

Idk, I was just fascinated in Rat IRL and Twitch jg after seeing him that I just studied the shit out of his streams and basically climbed from silver>plat spamming him. Although I do get bored of the old Rat sometimes, I rely on him heavily just purely due to the fact that he’s one of the last champions that can get close to solo carrying. (Applying insane pressure early while destroying team fights late. I hate how weak I am to invade though)

A lot of players Main a champion because they find them aesthetically pleasing, fits their playstyle, invested into the characters lore, and/or because of how power they are in the current meta.

I adore Elise if you checked my histroy. I have been maining her since season 3, even through her time of being the worst champion in the game around end of season 4 to early season 5 (I think...)

Don't really have much besides, If you love her play her. Win or lose you can still appreciate the character and build the confidence over time. Sure shes an off meta jungler atm, but it all comes down to the passion and dedication you have to main the champion.

Don't worry about doing well and don't worry about what people have to say. Basically all there is to it. Play your favorite champion purely for the joy of playing them. Wins will follow, and it's that much sweeter knowing you did it on your main. You'll lose some too, but that's ok to. You can always look forward to doing better with them next game. You just gotta stay positive, because the superior tactic is to never give up. ;)
